COUNTY SCHOOLS
Regular School Board Meeting
August 12, 2002 – 7:00 p.m.
The
following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the
Hardy County Board of Education. Official
copies of the minutes may be obtained, once they are approved by the Hardy
County Board of Education, by contacting Jeanette Keller, Executive Secretary to
the Superintendent, 510 Ashby Street, Moorefield WV 26836, phone 538-2348.
The Board heard a report from Mr. David Heishman regarding the work of the Hardy County Library Commission. Included was a review of the past collaborative agreements and the current services provided to students. In addition Mr. Heishman discussed his review of a joint school/community library. The county Library Commission is in the process of reviewing such programs. The Board thanked Mr. Heishman and invited him back to review the results of his study.
A review of the current status of Special Education enrollment was conducted. Discussion was held on the level and types of services, numbers of students served, effects on funding formula, and impact on personnel. Concern was expressed that this be carefully monitored to ensure the best possible services to all students while maintaining a balanced budget.
The Superintendent reported on a recent report of graduation rates. Hardy County had the second highest in the state, and Moorefield High School was the second highest individual school in the State for public schools – second only to Pickens High School. Staff, students, and administrators were commended for this outstanding accomplishment.
The annual financial statement was presented to the Board. The information contained is what is required by the State and will be published in the local paper. The final results show a surplus of $160,000. However, this includes PEIA funds that are carried over and paid in September when the new fiscal year starts. Actual surplus is $78,000. In addition, the Board reviewed news releases showing the State facing a $200 million shortfall for 2003-2004. All government agencies, including education, are facing a 10% budget cut.
Transportation costs for 2002-2003 were set for curricular field trips. They remained the same as last year - $1.00 per mile and $16.00 per hour for drivers.
The Board reviewed the school opening schedule for 2002. The key dates are August 21st for staff and August 26th for students.
