Regular Board Meeting

December 9, 2002 – 7:00 p.m.

East Hardy Early/Middle School

The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education. SUMMARY

The meeting was held at East Hardy Early/Middle School as part of the Board of Education visits to each school. The Educational Feature was a presentation by the middle school Choir under the direction of Ann Funkhouser. The performance was well received by everyone present, and the students and teachers were commended for their work.

The Board reviewed information on the cost of running a special Bond Election and timelines for an election in April. They requested that Mr. Joe Evans meet with the Board to review this process.

The Board approved identifying the following areas as “Critical Needs”, based upon a review of county current and projected needs. This will permit teachers in the following areas to be eligible for future tuition reimbursement from the State: Reading, Special Education, Math 5-12, Science 5-12, Social Studies 5-12, English/Language Arts 5-12, and Education Administration/ Leadership.

The Unified County Improvement Plan was presented. Review was conducted on the process and the major goals and objectives. The plan was approved.

Information on the Teacher recruitment grant and the materials that are being prepared to distribute to future teachers was presented.

The Superintendent presented his personal goals for 2002-2003. The focus was on the areas of Student Achievement, Fiscal Responsibility, and Communications/Leadership.

The Comprehensive Educational Facilities Plan, as required by State Code, was presented and reaffirmed.

The following Mission Statement/Positives were presented:

Mr. Funkhouser: Commended EHEM and Mr. Moore for his school. Congratulated the MHS football team.

Mr. Fertig: Commended the EHEM Choir and Ann Funkhouser. Recognized Mrs. Hammer for her work on the UCIP. Noted that the MMS Concert is this Saturday.

Mr. Pack: Noted the direct efforts of administrators, principals, teachers, and staff as they have demonstrated the efforts to Help Children Succeed.

Mr. Park: Commended the staff and principals of EHEM. Thanked the parents and community members for their help with the Moorefield High School butchering. They provided a real service to the students.

Mr. Williams: Commended Mr. Moore for EHEM school’s appearance and extended appreciation for the information on several school programs. Congratulated the MHS Football Team and Band for their performances in Wheeling.

Mr. Moore: Commended the EHHS and EHEM Bands and Choirs for their excellent community performances.

Mrs. Hammer: Recognized J. J. Butts for her achievement of National Teacher Certification. It is an honor for her and for Hardy County.

Mr. Whetzel: Commended Michelle Holstein for her efforts in technology and work on the EHEM webpage. Reported that that through the efforts of everyone, and especially Mrs. Hammer and Mrs. Burgess, Hardy County Schools are .2 over formula in professional personnel and .3 under formula in service. This is quite an accomplishment considering the drastic changes in enrollment.

The next meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education will be a regular meeting on January 13^th, 2003, 7:00 p. m. at the Hardy County Board of Education Offices.
