Regular School Board Meeting

July 1, 2002

The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education. SUMMARY

Seating of Board Members / Election of Officers: Oath of Office and Seating of Board Members Philip Fertig, Ken Pack, Hunter Williams for the four-year term ending June 30, 2006 were administered by Vetta Burgess. The Board approved the retaining of the current officers. Mr. Pack requested that this be done by acclimation.

The MHS Championship Baseball Team and Coach Wade Armentrout were recognized by the Board.

The Attendance Report was presented by Mr. Dave Wilbur, Attendance Director. Included in the report was information on home-schooled students and Out-of-County Transfers. In the areas of overall county attendance, individual school attendance, and dropouts, improvement was shown over previous years. Discussion was held on ways to better inform parents of the policies and guidelines. The Board commended Mr. Wilbur for his excellent work.

Mr. Whetzel provided an update on the Bond Proposal. Information was shared from the Bond Attorney with regard to a draft proposal. Several items were suggested for revision. The community meeting is scheduled for July 10^th, with July 22^nd being the deadline for final Board action.

Personnel Action:

Employed Christopher Godfrey as MHS/MMS Band/Choral Music Teacher.
Removed personnel from the Transfer List and Substitute List.
Restored MHS Vocational position to full time under certain conditions.

The Board approved two out-of-county student transfers.

Mission Statement Accomplishments:

§ Mr. Funkhouser: Commended Dave Wilbur for the outstanding job he does as Attendance Director and as Sports Writer for the Moorefield Examiner.

§ Mr. Williams: Commended the MHS Baseball team – they are a great bunch of seniors. Noted how pleased he is with how far we have come with the Bond Proposal – getting ready to go.

§ Mr. Pack: Commended Mr. Armentrout and the seniors for taking their time to come to the meeting – especially for students who have graduated. Extended appreciation for the comments and attitude of Mr. Armentrout.

§ Mr. Fertig: Echoed the other commendations and also extended appreciation to the Truancy Diversion programs, their services will be missed next year.

§ Mr. Park: Also echoed the previous commendations. Reported that Energy Express started today, and his son came home very positive. It is off to a great start. Commended the students’ participation in the State FFA Convention and wished both high schools and MMS good luck.

§ Mr. Whetzel: Pointed out that the new Board folders are “green” for this year. Like a stoplight signal; this it an indication that Hardy County Schools is ready to go. Extended appreciation to the new / returning Board members for their dedication and service to the students and community of Hardy County.

Announcements – Chairperson/Superintendent:

Mr. Pack informed the Board that effective July 1^st, 2002 he is no longer an employee of RESA VIII and complies with the new state law.
