Regular Board Meeting

October 21, 2002 – 7:00 p.m.

Moorefield Middle School

SUMMARY

 

The meeting was held at Moorefield Middle School as part of the Board of Education visits to each school.  The educational feature was a presentation by Janet Clayton, teacher, on writing across the curriculum.  The audience participated in an interactive writing / speaking activity.  It was a great activity and demonstrated the techniques that can be used to encourage writing and speaking.

 

At the conclusion, Mrs. Clayton was surprised with a presentation by Mr. Carlton Hillard.  She was presented a plaque recognizing her as the State VFW Middle School Teacher of the Year.  It was a special honor for her.

 

The Board reviewed the work of the Bond Support Committee and reviewed several itmes of information related to the Bond.

 

An update was given to the Board on changes in the presentation schedule for the SBA.  The changes will not affect the funding amounts or dates.

 

The Superintendent reported on the results of the 2001-2002 writing assessment.  Students at each grade level and school exceeded the state requirements and showed a continuing trend of improvement.  Especially notable were MHS 10th grade scores of 92%.

 

The Board received an update from Mrs. Sharon Hammer on the Energy Express Program.  The program was very successful last year and was extended for continuation of the program.

 

The Board accepted the Unified School Plans for each school.  Mrs. Hammer presented a summary of the information and commended the schools for the excellent job.

 

The Board requested that information be sent out reminding parents that they are to contact the Bus Driver or Transportation Department if they have questions or concerns.  Parents should not stop or delay a bus during it’s regular run.

 

In personnel action the Board:

 

Employed the following:

 

Ø      Anthony Ford – Substitute Teacher

Ø      Carla Carr – Substitute Teacher

Ø      Andy Miller – Transferred to the Fisher/Dooley bus route.

Ø      Deborah Wolfe – Substitute Custodian IV for the duration of Military Leave of Absence of regular employee.

 

Accepted the following resignations:

 

Ø      Harold Junkins – Substitute Teacher

Ø      Virgil Puffenberger – Substitute Teacher

Ø      Wade Armentrout – MMS Girls’ Basketball Coach

 

Approved the following postings:

 

Ø      Bus Operator for Kessel/Frosty Hollow route.

Ø      Middle School Girls’ Basketball Coach – MMS

 

The following Mission Statement / Positives were presented:

 

Ø      Mr. Funkhouser:  Commended the teachers and students for the excellent writing scores.  Commended Ms. Whitecotton for the overall appearance of MMS.

 

Ø      Mr. Fertig:  Commended MMS for its excellent programs.  Commended Mrs. Clayton for her activity, including getting him to participate.  Reported that he recently toured the Greenbank Observatory and would recommend it as an educational fieldtrip for students.

 

Ø      Mr. Pack:  Commended Ms. Whitecotton for the appearance of the building and the excellent instructional programs.  Commended Mrs. Clayton for the State VFW Award; it brings honor to MMS and all of Hardy County.

 

Ø      Mr. Park:  Reported on the excellent dedication of the MES playground to the memories of Joey Ludwick, Barbara Phillips, and Nancy Barb.

 

Ø      Ms. Whitecotton:  Reported that she has worked with her bus drivers who are implementing the Positive Behaviors Program used in the school.  She is pleased with their acceptance of this program.

 

Ø      Mr. Mike Funkhouser:  Commended Mr. Whetzel for his presentation to the EHHS staff on the Building Bond Proposal.

 

Ø      Mrs. Hammer:  Noted that Chris DeVault did a presentation to the RESA on the Positive Behaviors Program, and it was well received.  Commended all the administrators, staff, and parents who worked on the USIP.  Thanked the secretaries at the schools for their work and pleasant attitude when called on the phone.

 

Ø      Mr. Whetzel:  Thanked everyone for the very positive response to the information on the Bond Proposal.  It is being well received throughout the county.

 

The next regular meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education will be November 4th at 7:00 p.m. at MHS. There will be a
tour of the school at 6:15 p.m. for anyone interested. Thanks.
