Regular School Board Meeting

September 23, 2002 – 7:00 p.m.

The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education. SUMMARY

Prior to the meeting, representatives of the Sanders School, Board Members, and visitors dedicated the new flagpole and plaque to recognize Sanders School. The flag was raised for the first time as Mr. Fertig played God Bless America. Everyone toured the Board Office and viewed the exhibit that has been set up in the front hall on the history of Sanders School.

Wishes for a speedy recovery were extended to Mr. Red Funkhouser.

Discussion was held on the submission of the Needs Project for Hardy County to the SBA. The guidelines for the SBA require that only one project may be submitted during any year. This year’s submission will be for the intermediate school. Additional projects for East Hardy Early/Middle and Moorefield Elementary will be submitted in following years. As the Bonds would not be sold until 2004, this will not be a problem. The election clearly requires that SBA monies must be available prior to selling any Bonds.

An update was provided on the meeting of the Bond Support Committee. It was a very positive meeting, and the committee members were commended for their efforts. Information is being gathered and distribution will begin the first of October.

Mr. Fertig and Mr. Whetzel gave an update on the recent WVSBA Training held in Charleston. Information on the No Child Left Behind federal legislation and Board of Education operations were presented to the Board.

Board members elected to continue the free coverage provided to Board Members through the Workers Compensation Division – as related to their position.

The following personnel actions were taken:

Employed the following:

Robin Williams: Transferred to permanent position of Preschool/Special Needs Teacher at MES.
Chere’ Link: Transferred to Custodian II at MMS.
Rebecca Strawderman: Temporary part-time Liaison for Special Education services.
Tonya Crites Davy: Substitute Teacher.
David Kindrick: Middle School Boys Basketball Coach at EHEMS.
Substitute Cooks: Sabrina Allanson, Janet Flinn, Anna Crites, Raven Kesner, Tena Conner, Amy Ketterman.
Barbara Ruckman Kidwell: Substitute Aide.

Accepted the following resignation:

Daniel Simmons: Middle School Boys Basketball Coach at EHEMS.

Approved the following postings:

Elementary Teacher for multi-grades at EHEMS, preferably with Reading Endorsement.
Elementary Teacher for multi-grades at MES, preferably with Reading Endorsement.
Teacher for Preschool/Special Needs at MES for one year only.
Cook I / Custodian I, ½ time for Preschool at MES.
Custodian I, ½ time at EHEMS.
Substitute Custodian.
Temporary part-time person for ESL services.

The following are previously posted and will continue until filled:

Countywide Speech/Language Pathologist.
Art Teacher for K-12 at East Hardy schools.
Building Construction Teacher, ½ time, at EHHS (until regular employee returns from active military duty).

The Board agreed to hold a special meeting on September 30^th, 2002. This will include a tour of the 911 facilities and a special meeting to review enrollment and its affect on the personnel formula and the impact of federal legislation on adding additional Classroom Size Reduction teachers.

Mission Statement / Positives:

Mr. Williams: Thanked all those who showed up for the Sanders Dedication. Commended Mr. Fertig for his trumpet playing. Related to the Board members how much he enjoyed the visit to the Preschool Program at MES.

Mr. Fertig: Commended the work of the WVSBA; it was an excellent learning opportunity for him.

Mr. Pack: Complemented the Sanders community and made special note of the care and dedication they showed their students during the years of the schools operation. They certainly went beyond the expected to meet the needs of these students during a very difficult time.

Mr. Park: Extended compliments for the work that has been done on the Board Office; it has become an effective and efficient building for the operation of the school system.

Mrs. Hammer: On behalf of the employees who work in the Board Office, appreciation was extended for the work to upgrade the facilities.

Mr. Whetzel: Commended the work being performed by the Bond Support Committee and his appreciation for their efforts. Thanked everyone for their efforts to create a suitable environment for the business operations conducted at the Hardy County Board of Education Offices.

The next regular meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education will be October 7, 7:00 p.m. at East Hardy High School.
