Regular School Board Meeting

September 9, 2002 – 7:00 p.m.

The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education. SUMMARY

The Board heard a presentation on the status of the Headstart/Preschool program at MES. Discussion was held on the breakfast program and how to insure that the meal could be prepared and delivered to the room in the most efficient manner possible. Board members indicated they would review the situation and work on the best means to address the issue. Board members thanked the individuals for their cooperation and efforts to help students.

The Board was given an update on the status of the Building Bond. A review of the key issues to be addressed and a draft of an informational flyer was presented. The meeting of the Bond Support Committee was rescheduled for September 17^th, 7:00 p.m., Moorefield High School Library, at which all interested individuals will be invited.

An update was provided on school opening for 2002-2003. Information was provided on transportation, staffing, and enrollment. At this time enrollment is up over 20 students, not including students listed as absent.

An update was provided on the current enrollment. As of the 9^th of September enrollment had increased from 2248 for last year to 2319 – and increase of 72 students.

Board policies related to Time on Task, Graduation Requirements, Semester Exams, and Extracurricular Events were approved with minor revisions.

As per Board Policy the per diem meal rate for meals was established for 2002-2003.

Creative Writing IGO’s for MHS were approved.

Student transfers were approved.

Discussion was held on the upcoming WVSBA Meeting.

In personnel the following actions were taken:

Mary Tompkins: Removed from preferred Recall List and placed as Supervisory Aide II, Kindergarten at EHEMS effective September 12, 2002.
Jennifer Ours: Transferred to Cook II at MHS, effective September 25, 2002.
Rebecca Brill: Mentor Teacher at EHEMS.
Daniel Simmons: Varsity Boys Basketball Coach, EHHS.
Carrie Rogers: JV Girls Volleyball Coach, EHHS.
Malcolm Chandler: Approved as Volunteer Football Coach at MHS.
Matthew Crites: Approved as Volunteer Football Coach at MHS.
Todd Snyder: Approved as Volunteer Athletic Trainer at MHS.

Accepted the following resignations:

Chere Link: Substitute Cook and Substitute Custodian.

Approved the following postings:

Preschool/Special Needs Teacher – MES.
Custodian II – MMS.
Temporary part-time Teacher for ESL services.
Temporary part-time Liaison for Special Education Services.

Continue to post the following until filled:

Speech/Language Pathologist Countywide.
Art Teacher for K-12 – East Hardy Schools
Building Construction Teacher – EHHS (until regular teacher returns from military duty)

Mission Statement / Positives:

Mr. Williams: Noted the accomplishments of the school system in the completion of the review of the entire Policy Manual. Congratulated each one for their hard work. Extended appreciation to the personnel for their attendance at the meeting and willingness to work together to address the needs of students.

Mr. Funkhouser: Commended the Principal, Teachers, and Service staff for their hard work on the Headstart/Preschool program.

Mr. Park: Extended appreciation to the Special Education staff for their promptness and professionalism in addressing the needs of students. They have shown a real effort in trying to find ways to help students.

Mr. Fertig: Recently attended athletic events at EHHS and MHS. Commended the parents and community members for their support.

Mr. Pack: Commented on the recent MHS football game and the involvement of so many students – team members, cheerleaders, and band. It was excellent.

Mrs. Hammer: Commended Mr. Dave Fincham for his work in the Board Office. He is a great asset.

Mr. Whetzel: Reported that the WVDOE has visited several schools to monitor air quality. Every report was that the facilities meet or exceed all requirements. Minor items were noted for repair and are being addressed. It was reported that the water systems at East Hardy are constantly tested and monitored and meet all local and state requirements. In addition, these agencies will be contacted to determine if there are additional tests that may be performed to insure the quality of the water.

The next regular meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education will be September 23, 2002, 7:00 p.m. at the School Board Office.
