Regular School Board Meeting

December 8, 2003 – 7:00 p.m.

East Hardy High School

The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education. SUMMARY

The evening began with Board members enjoying a meal prepared by Mrs. Cynthia Walters and the EHHS Spanish Club. The Board was most pleased and deigned with the meal.

Beginning the meeting was a presentation by the EHHS Choir under the direction of Mr. Thompson. The students sang several selections from their upcoming Christmas presentation. It was an excellent presentation.

Public comment was received on last week efforts to maintain heat at MHS.

Mr. Whetzel and Mr. Williams provided an update on the presentation of the Needs Project to the SBA. An update on the facilities and Bond information was provided. The Board agreed that they would wish to meet with the architectural firm to discuss building needs and specific projects. Discussion was held on Bond information that showed a 3.7 million dollar bond, the same as currently in effect, would effectively be paid off in 9 years rather than the current 10 years.

In other action the Board:

· Approved the UCIP for 2003-2004.

· Reviewed the Improvement Consultant Team Recommendations for EHEM.

· Approved the waiver request for AP English for EHHS and MHS.

· Approved the use of Project Ride Staff Surveys.

Mission Statement Accomplishments:

Mr. Pack: Noted the achievements of P.J. Combs for his fine performance at the State Football Championship. Commended the excellent performance by the EHHS Choir.

Mr. Fertig: Reported that he enjoyed his first trip to the state championship. It was an excellent experience for everyone. Thanked the Spanish club for the excellent food.

Mr. Park: Commended the parents of all the football and band participants at both schools. Their support and encouragement is a positive experience for everyone.

Mr. Funkhouser: Congratulated the MHS football team for their victory at the “Mud Bowl”.

Mr. Williams: Congratulated MHS football team and especially noted the performance by Ronald Hatcher as a member of the EHHS choir.

Mrs. Hammer: Echoed the congratulations and thanks to the MHS Football team, EHHS Choir and EHHS Spanish Club.

Mr. Whetzel: Thanked the Board of Education members, Hardy County Schools staff, and Hardy County community for the expressions of sympathy for the loss of his father. These words and deeds meant a great deal to him and his family.

The next meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education will be held January 5, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. at the Central Office.
