Regular Board Meeting

March 17, 2003 – 7:00 p.m.

Moorefield Elementary School

The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education. SUMMARY

MHS, MMS, and MES presented their annual report on the work of the LSIC Committees. A review of the goals for the local council and updates on their USIPs were presented. Board members discussed the progress being made in the individual schools. Appreciation was extended to everyone for the efforts to promote student success.

The Board reviewed the final copy of the State Auditors Report. Information had previously been reviewed in the fall. The action plan for addressing reported issues has been put into place and is being followed.

Discussion was held with representatives of the Secondary Alternative Scheduling Committee. The Committee requested that they be permitted to have until May 1^st to make a recommendation regarding the best schedule, and that 2003–2004 be set aside for professional development, revision of policies and procedure, and determining of personnel needs. The Board approved these recommendations.

The Board approved the setting of the Levy Rate for 2003-2004. In the update on the fiscal status specific information on the current status of the budget was provided. In summary the Board was informed that it is expected that the school system will end the year with a balanced budget and little or no surplus. However, unofficially we had been informed that additional increased enrollment money was approved through the state budget. This may provide an additional $100,000+ for this year’s budget. In this event is was recommended that monies be set aside to insure a balanced budget and excess funds be earmarked to address increased enrollment needs for next year, as this years allocation was for one year only.

Cindy Taylor – Custodian I, ½ time at East Hardy Early/Middle School.
Beverly Coppe – Moorefield Elementary School Principal for 2003-2004.

Approved the following postings:

Art Teacher, K-12 at East Hardy Schools
Speech/Language Pathologist – Countywide
Vocational-Agriculture Teacher at Moorefield High School

Accepted the request for Military Leave of Absence from Josh See from his positions as:

Substitute Teacher
Girls Basketball Coach at MMS

The following Mission Statement / Positives were presented:

All members extended appreciation to the schools for their LSIC presentation.

In Addition:

Mr. Pack: Commended Mrs. Coppe for the good job as Principal. Thanked the Alternative Scheduling Committee for their presentation and work. Commended the County Science Fair winners, especially Karisa Wilson.

Mr. Fertig: Reported on his participation as a member of the Board of Directors of the Davis Center. They are doing a good job in helping troubled youth.

Mr. Park: Commended Mr. Haslacker on his work as Vocational teacher and the success of the Ham, Bacon and Egg Show.

Mr. Funkhouser: Commended the Principal and staff of MES for the appearance of the building.

Mrs. Hammer: Extended congratulations to the Regional Math Field Day students, and the Golden Horseshoe winners: Jennifer Gillies, Marcus Weese, and Aaron Thomas. Also Thad Garrett for selection to the Governors Academy.

Mr. Whetzel: Commended the work of all the staff, and especially Mrs. Hammer, for the work on the UCIP. It was approved by the State and received excellent reviews. Reported that the administrative staff will have it first “internet” meeting where they will report to various sites and conduct the meeting.

The next meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education will be a regular meeting on March 31^st, 2003, at 7:00 p.m. at the Hardy County Board of Education Offices.
