The
following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the
Hardy County Board of Education. Official
copies of the minutes may be obtained, once they are approved by the Hardy

SUMMARY
The Board
addressed a number of key issues throughout the meeting.
These included:

Unified School Improvement Plan:
Mrs. Hammer presented an update on the county plan and the work that is
being undertaken. Included was a presentation of the new recruitment CD that
will be distributed to prospective employees.

Budget: Mr. Whetzel
presented the proposed budget for 2003-2004. The projections show a balanced budget for 2002-2003.
The budget will be available for comment until the Board Hearing of April
15th.
·
NCLB: An update on the
status of East Hardy/Early Middle School was given.
Included was information on the accreditation status of the school, which
will mean that for the 2003-2004 school year additional professional development
and student programming will be available at the school.
EHEM will be designated as a School of Choice, which means parents
may elect to send their students to another school within the county.
Parent meetings have been set up to present this information.
In other business
the Board:
- Withdrew
official approval of the planned Costa Rica trip.
However, this does not affect the status of the trip as it is outside
of the school calendar.
- Received
copies of the West Virginia / Hardy County Report Cards for 2001-2002.
- Approved
the Title I Parent Involvement Policy, BBIA, as amended.
- Distributed
Personal Leave Bank Policy GBR for first reading.
- Received
an update on the status of the Code of Conduct policy and Attendance policy.
- Received
an update on the Secondary Alternative Scheduling plans, including a
scheduled evening meeting for Board members and the public.
In personnel
action the Board:
- Accepted
the resignation of EHHS Principal, Steve Wilson, due to retirement,
effective June 30, 2003.
- Approved
Daniel Simmons as Volunteer Baseball Coach for EHHS.
- Employed
Nancy Clark as Substitute Teacher.
Approved the

The following
Mission Statement / Positives were presented:
- Mr.
Pack: Commended EHHS for their
success at the State Destination Imagination competition.
The sponsor was Heath Hershberger.
Commended the students who participated in the State Science Fair at
Marshall University.
- Mr.
Fertig: Commended the work that
had gone into the recruitment CD. Noted
that the addition of Assistant Principals had been a goal of the Board for a
number of years. Thanked MHS
for the outstanding display of student art.
- Mr.
Park: Noted that it is an
exciting time for Hardy County Schools.
The recruitment of new people and the outstanding quality of
applicants speak well for our school system.
- Mr.
Funkhouser: Commended the
school administration for their work on the UCIP and the efforts to address
the effects of the federal NCLB laws.
- Mr.
Williams: Also commented that
the CD will serve as a great recruitment tool. Noted that the break in the weather will bring about the
opportunity to begin the spring sport season and the excitement that this
brings. Also extended
appreciation to Mr. Wilson for his years of service to Hardy County and the
caring for his school and students that he always showed.
- Mrs.
Hammer: Saluted Mr. Wilson for
his dedication to students. Reported
that the county students selected for the Governors Honor Academy included
Katie Fisher, Ben Hines, and Scotty Hammer.
- Mr.
Whetzel: Provided the Board
with a list of State Science Fair winners, including Taylor Kuykendall who
was a State first place winner. Presented
the Board with a plaque of recognition from Eastern Community College.
Informed the Board that Mr. Charlie Combs had been nominated by
Krystal Arose, and had been selected by McDonalds, for the regional
Distinguished Educator Award--only one of two from WV, and one of 24
throughout the mid-Atlantic region.
The next meeting
of the Hardy County Board of Education will be the reconvened budget meeting and
regular meeting on April 15th, 2003 at the Hardy County Board of
Education Office at 7:00 p.m.
