Regular Board Meeting

March 3, 2003 – 7:00 p.m.

East Hardy Early/Middle School

The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education. SUMMARY

The meeting began with a special presentation. Mrs. Judith Heishman, Kindergarten Teacher at EHEMS, was recognized by the Hardy County Board of Education for her 38 years of service to the students of Hardy County. The Board presented her with a plaque in recognition of her devotion. Board members thanked and commended Mrs. Heishman for her outstanding work and wished her many more years.

EHEMS and EHHS principals presented their annual report on the work of the LSIC committees. A review of the goals for the Local Council and work to date was presented. Board members discussed the progress being made in the individual schools. Appreciation was extended to everyone for the efforts to promote student success.

A list of Young Writers winners was presented. Students were congratulated, and staff was commended for their efforts.

Mr. Fincham, Director of Testing, presented information on the new State testing requirements and its relationship to NCLB. Information packets were distributed to Board members. Discussion was held on the impact to Hardy County and the concerted effort that will be needed to address the requirements.

Discussion was held on the availability of services through Hardy Telecommunications and the impact on E-Rate reimbursement. The Board recognized the outstanding contributions that have been made by Hardy Telecommunications and supported working with local phone companies to determine the best system.

In personnel action the Board employed:

- John Rodriques

Approved postings for the following positions for 2003-2004:

- Principal for MES

- Art Teacher, K-12 at East Hardy schools

- Countywide Speech/Language Pathologist

- Vocational Agriculture Teacher at MHS

- Custodian I at EHEMS (extended posting – for present school year)

The following Mission Statement / Positives were presented:

All members extended appreciation to Judith Heishman for her dedication. She does an outstanding job, and they hoped she would be able to work with students for another 38 years.

In Addition:

Mr. Pack: Thanked Mr. Moore for his presentation and the information on the good things that are happening at EHEM.

Mr. Fertig: Commended the students who were recognized in the Young Writers and wished them luck at the State level. Has read about the work of our local Legislators and the efforts they are making in Charleston to address the budget problem.

Mr. Park: Commended Mr. Moore and Mr. Wilson for their work. Congratulated the staff for their efforts to get schools back into the swing of things after the “break” for snow.

Mr. Funkhouser: Commended the MHS girls for winning the PVC and Sectional tournaments. Noted that John Ray Funkhouser broke the 1000 point level for EHHS.

Mr. Williams: Extended appreciation to the volunteers, especially at East Hardy, and the other civic organizations who support our school system. Commended the work of EHHS on their Responsible Student Program.

Mrs. Hammer: Extended additional commendation for Mrs. Heishman and how she serves as an example for each of us.

Mr. Moore: Commended the 180 students who have achieved recognition on the Reading Hall of Fame through Accelerated Reader.

Mr. Whetzel: Commended the work of Principal and Staff at MMS for their application to receive Exemplary School Status. Good luck!

The next meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education will be a regular meeting on March 17th, 2003 at Moorefield Elementary School.
