Regular Board Meeting

May 5, 2003 – 7:00 p.m.

The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education. SUMMARY

The meeting began by recognizing the students, and their parents, who were selected for the Governors Academies: Ben Hines, Katie Fisher, Thad Garrett, and Scott Hammer.

A presentation was given by Linda Wright, teacher, on behalf of the Secondary Alternative Scheduling Committee. Discussion was held with regard to the work that has been done and their recommendations. The Board approved adoption of the “Four by Four” schedule, with modifications. Support was pledged for the upcoming year in providing professional development, development of policies, and designing appropriately staffed instructional schedules.

The Board was provided Levy information on the upcoming Building Bond and informed of a work session on May 12, 6:30 at the School Board Office with the members of the Bond Steering Committee.

The Board received a copy of the “School of Choice” notice sent to all parents at EHEM.

Approval was granted for purchasing three new buses for next school year.

Under Public Comment, a delegation representing the Moorefield High School Athletic Boosters shared concerns regarding the addition of Soccer as an additional sport at MHS.

In personnel action the Board

Employed for 2003-2004:

Linda Robb: Grade 2 Multi-Subjects Elementary Teacher – MES.
Sandra Hagert: English/Language Arts Teacher – MMS.
Charles Landes: Substitute Teacher
Stephanie Ours: Clerk II at MES/MMS

Accepted the following resignation due to retirement:

Charles Landes: Teacher, Social Studies/Computers – MHS.

Rescinded the following posting:

Clerk II at EHEMS/EHHS.

Approved the following postings:

Teacher, Grade 1 Multi-Subjects – MES
Teacher, Title I Reading/Math – EHEMS
Supervisory Aide II – MES

The following Mission Statement / Positives were presented:

Mr. Pack: Commented on the partnership between McDonalds and MMS in the fundraiser for a Scholarship for an 8^th Grader at MMS. It was a great project. Also noted that Mr. Williams and his wife worked at McDonalds as part of the fundraiser.

Mr. Fertig: Congratulated all staff on Teacher Appreciation Week. Thanked them for their hard work.

Mr. Park: Thanked the Alternative Scheduling Committee for their hard work and recommendations.

Mr. Funkhouser: Commended the Governors Academy Students. They will be great representatives for Hardy County.

Mr. Williams: Noted that he and his wife had a great day at McDonalds. Commended the staff for efforts to move ahead with staffing needs.

Mrs. Hammer: Saluted all teachers as part of Teacher Recognition Week. Extended a special thank you to the parents and business partners who have actively participated in employee interviews. They are a great asset.

Mr. Whetzel: Commended the Board for their pro-active actions and sincere interest in addressing the needs of EHEM due to the impact of No Child Left Behind.

The next meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education will be a regular meeting on May 19^th, 2003 at East Hardy Early/Middle School.
