HARDY COUNTY SCHOOLS

Regular School Board Meeting

October 6, 2004 – 7:00 p.m.

SUMMARY

 

The Board began with a presentation by MMS students under the direction of Tammie Helmick and Deanna Whetzel.  The students presented a variety of different types of poetry they had written.  The Board was most impressed and commended them for their work.

 

The Board formally recognized MMS for their achievement of Exemplary School status.  The Board gave the members of the Writing Team plaques of recognition:  Barbara Miller, Mary Beth Hardy, Janet Clayton Rose, Jane Kessel, Mary Gunter, and Barbara Whitecotton.  A plaque honoring the entire school staff and students was also presented.

 

Information on the results of the Building Bond was presented.  Discussion was held on the implications of the defeat of the Bond and what the next steps may be.  The Board requested to review the current Comprehensive Educational Facilities Plan at the next meeting before taking any further action.

 

Mrs. Hammer provided an update on the staff development being undertaken to implement Alternative Scheduling at the high schools.  This staff development will continue throughout the year.

 

The “Critical Needs” areas for professional staff was presented and approved.  For 2003-2004 they include:  1) Professional Development; 2) Curriculum Alignment; 3) Policy Review;

4) Public Information; and 5) Evaluation.

 

A revision in the Board meeting schedule for meetings in the schools was presented.

 

A request for out-of-county transfer was rescinded.

The next regular meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education will be October 20, 2003 at East Hardy Early/ Middle School.  A special meeting of the Board will be held on October 13, 2003 to address personnel and student discipline.
