Regular School Board Meeting

September 22, 2003

SUMMARY

In major action:

 

The Board received a Building Bond update.  Information was provided on the work of the parent organization, public meeting plans for the next two weeks, and review of the current Bond market.  The key point remains that the Bond is exactly the same as what has been proposed for the past year, the SBA will have over $200 million to distribute this year, and maintenance cost and enrollment numbers continues to increase.

 

Data on the status of Hardy County Schools in achievement of NCLB requirements was presented.  This shows the status of the county as a whole.  Discussion was held on the efforts that must be made to achieve accreditation.

 

Information on the effects of Isabel on the school system was provided:

§        EHHS and MMS were used as emergency shelters.

§        Every school suffered roof leaks.

§        Board of Education office has extensive water damage.

Gratitude was expressed to the emergency service agencies and all school employees for their efforts in preparing for the hurricane.

 

A review of the major components of the USIP being prepared by EHEM was conducted.  These objectives will meet the requirements of OEPA and NCLB.

 

In other action:

 

An enrollment update shows that the number is 34 students higher than the same time last year.  Primarily growth is at the secondary level.  Preliminary figures show the county .5 positions over formula in professional and 2.5 in service positions.

 

The board approved, on second reading, policy BFB – School Board Effectiveness.

 

E. A. Hawse was approved to utilize EHHS as an emergency shelter as part of the agreement with the Red Cross.
