Regular School Board Meeting

February 23, 2004 – 7:00 p.m.

The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education. SUMMARY

The Board met with several teachers and parents from EHHS and EHEMS regarding the furnace and heating units at the schools. Discussion was held on the effort to correct the problems and the steps that have been taken. Later in the meeting Jeff Brown, representing Casto Technical, met with the Board regarding the condition of the furnaces and heating units. After discussion the Board requested that the firm develop performance contract options that could be considered to address the long-term replacement, repair, and maintenance of the systems. These proposals will be ready in March.

In other action:

The Board examined the defibrillators, which will be distributed to each school. Appreciation was extended to the county commissioners for their efforts.

The Pre-School Plan for 2004-2005 was presented and approved. The focus continues to be on designing a program that will meet the requirements of the law and one that can be conducted within the facility and financial restraints in the county. There are no major changes in the plan from the current year. Law requires that a comprehensive plan be in place by 2012.

The Superintendent presented a brief review of the major actions by the legislature to date and expectations for the remainder of the session.

Wanda Shockey – Cook III at MMS, effective June 9, 2004.

Substitute Instructional Aide at MES for the remainder of the present school term. Special Education – Thursdays and Fridays.
Temporary Maintenance/General Handyman, effective immediately.
Special Education Teacher at EHHS for 2004-2005 school term.
Custodian II at MMS, 230-day for 2004-2005 school term.

Mission Statement Accomplishments:

Mr. Williams: Extended welcome to George Kidwell, Board of Education candidate for his attendance. Commended the MHS girl’s basketball team for winning the PVCX Championship.

Mr. Park: Extended appreciation for the efforts to address the heating situations and hope for a permanent solution.

Mr. Fertig: Noted that it was National FFA Week and commented on Andrew Yost, recent graduate of EHHS for his running for the office of Commissioner of Agriculture.

Mr. Pack: Extended appreciation to Mr. Whetzel for his effort to have Casto Technical attend the meeting and discuss options for EHHS and EHEM.

Mrs. Hammer: Reported on her “Breakfast with Students” at MHS. Commended the secondary staff for their work on new policies related to implementation of Block Scheduling.

Mr. Whetzel: Thanked the MMS FFA for the visit to the Board Office and invitation to a luncheon for the central office staff.

The next regular meeting will be held March 8^th, 2004 at EHEM School.
