School Board Meeting
July
26, 2004 - 7:00 p.m.
Hardy
County Board of Education Office
The
following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above-dated meeting of the
Hardy County Board of Education. Official
copies of the minutes may be obtained, once they are approved by the Hardy
County Board of Education, by contacting Jeanette Keller, Executive Secretary to
the Superintendent, 510 Ashby Street, Moorefield WV 26836, (304) 530-2348.
SUMMARY
Major items
included:
- A
presentation by Mr. Dave Wilbur, Attendance Director, of the annual
attendance report. Information was provided on out-of-county attendance,
home-school attendance, graduation rates, and attendance.
The attendance for the last school year was the highest in history.
Commendations were extended to Mr. Wilbur and all those who work so
hard on promoting attendance.
- A
presentation by Mrs. Dorothy Wilson on the status of the Child Nutrition
Program. Information was
provided on the efforts to insure all eligible families who qualify for free
or reduced lunch were included. Of
concern was the number of parents who are delinquent in payment.
Increased efforts, including filling legal judgments against parents,
were discussed.
The School year is
projected to end with a $23,000 actual surplus.
The Board directed that these funds be earmarked for county expenses in
the HVAC renovations. The Board was
informed that the accounting procedures used by the State will result in the
showing of a surplus in excess of $600,000.
However, this includes funds that have been encumbered and obligated to
expenses, and is not funds which are discretionary in use.
Discussion was
held on the new five year strategic plan for West Virginia and Hardy County
Schools. Additional Board member
training will be secured as part of this process. This is part of the State
expectations regarding addressing the requirements of NCLB.
