Regular School Board Meeting

March 15, 2004 – 7:00 p.m.

Moorefield Middle School

The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education. SUMMARY

The meeting began with the annual LSIC presentations.

MES: Mrs. Coppe presented an overview of the efforts being taken to address NCLB requirements and the goals of their USIP. An extensive list of projects, training, and activities were presented.

MHS: Sherri Barb presented an overview of the USIP goals for MHS and the efforts to address these. The efforts to insure student achievement in regard to NCLB were the primary focus.

The Board expressed commendation to both schools for their excellent work and the success they are achieving.

Mr. Jeff Brown and Nate Casto provided an update on the performance contract proposals for addressing HVAC needs throughout Hardy County schools. Discussion was held on what services would be provided and the proposed cost. The Board requested time to review this information and for Casto representatives to meet with the Superintendent and discuss options. Further recommendations will be brought to a future meeting.

The annual fiscal report of the county was presented. Information on budget status, shortages, and additional revenues was provided. At this point additional cost for substitutes and utilities are resulting in a very tight budget. It is projected that once again Hardy County Schools will end the year even or with a slight surplus.

The Board reviewed the names of various students who have won contests over the past several months. Congratulations were extended to all students for their outstanding achievement. Future Board meeting will include recognition of a number of these students.

In other actions:

The Board approved the announcement of summer mowing bids for selected schools.
Approved Policy JDJ – Student Attendance for first reading.

Daniel Boyles, Science/Physics Teacher at MHS/EHHS, effective May 14, 2004.

Rescinded the following employments (inadvertently hired before posting closed)

Eileen “Rosie” Mongold – Cook for EHEM Energy Express program
Jennifer Ours – Cook for MES Energy Express program

Mission Statement Accomplishments:

Mr. Funkhouser commended the LSICs and the good turn out of committee members. Congratulations were extended to the MHS Girls Basketball team.
Mr. Park commented on the annual Ham, Bacon and Egg show. He felt that Mr. Haslacker and his students did a great job. He extended thanks to the community for their support of this activity.
Mr. Fertig commended the LSICs for their work. Noted that March is “Arts in the Schools” month and noted that Potomac State is having a number of free activities and that there is a county art display at the Library.
Mr. Pack commended all the winners of the various contests for their work. Great job!
Mr. Whetzel distributed information on the summer training programs for staff. It will be the most extensive programs ever conducted for our staff.

The next regular meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education will be at 7:00 p.m. on April 5, 2004 at the School Board Office. The Board will hold a special meeting on March 16, 2004 to conduct a student discipline hearing.
