Regular School Board Meeting

SUMMARY

 

Presentations: 

 

The meeting began with a demonstration lesson on the Standards Based Math Program.  Ms. Michelle Holstein and Mrs. Rachel Whetzel of EHEM presented a first grade lesson for the Board.  This activity was followed by Mrs. Louis Miller, MMS presenting a seventh grade lesson.  Mrs. Whitecotton followed up with information on the school systems Math Five-Year plan and the work of the county Math Cadre.

 

In major action:

 

The Board approved proceeding with the construction of classrooms/offices by the EHHS Building Trades classes.  Further information was requested to determine the best future location and use of this facility.

 

The architectural fee proposal from Williams, Schriver and Gandee was approved.  Work will now begin on preparation of specifications for the canopy and doors at MMS for presentation to the Board.

 

The Board reviewed cost estimates and approved the purchase of the salad bar and hot bar for MMS.  In addition they also approved the purchase of a new warmer for EHHS.

 

The Board completed the first reading of school Board policy BDE – Executive Sessions.  This will now be sent out for public comment.

 

Approval was given for the construction of a new multi-purpose room for MES to be submitted to the West Virginia Building Authority as the Major Improvement Project for 2005-2006. 

 

In other business:

 

A report on the presentation to the School Building Authority regarding the Moorefield Intermediate School needs project was made by Mr. Williams and Mr. Whetzel.  They reported a very positive meeting and that they are optimistic for its approval.

 

A preliminary report on the fiscal audit for 2004-2005 was given.  The oral exit interview reported no findings or recommendations.  The audit of the individual schools also was very positive.  The full written report will be represented to the Board once received.

 

Mr. Williams discussed with the Board the idea of regularly visiting the schools.  His recent visits to each site were very positive and productive.  He presented an update on actions that have been taken on items that were discussed during his visits.

 

Information was provided to the Board on the recent bus inspection.  In addition, Mr. Bob Summerfield, Bus Inspector for the West Virginia Department of Education, was on hand to address questions regarding the school system bus fleet.  It was reported that the safety of the buses in Hardy County have been, and still are, within state expectations and are certainly safe for students transportation.  Discussion was held on the need to secure additional help with bus repairs and to have a facility for working on buses.

 

Several student transfers were approved.
