The
following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the
Hardy County Board of Education. Official
copies of the minutes may be obtained, once they are approved by the Hardy

SUMMARY
The meeting began
with the annual recognition of student achievement.
Parents and students were invited to be recognized by the Board in the
following areas: State Science
Fair, State Math Field Day Team, Young Writers, Golden Horseshoe, and Writing
Assessment. The Board presented
each student with a certificate and medal in recognition and congratulated them
for their accomplishments.
The Board reviewed
and approved the following policies: Modified
Diploma, Advanced Academic Diploma, and Distinguished Performance Award.
These policies will go into effect with the 2005-2006 school year.
The school
calendar, as recommended by the County Calendar Committee, was approved.
In other actions:
- A
student trip to NYC for April of 2006 was approved.
- An
out-of-county transfer was approved.
Under Public
Comment:
- Mr.
Larry Salyers had comment regarding list of positions with the State
Department, responsibilities of the Superintendent, tenure of Assistant
Superintendents, and the procedure for handling bus problems and reporting
bus accidents.

David Weatherholt inquired as to whether felony background checks were
conducted on employees.

Mission Statement
Accomplishments
- Mr.
Funkhouser commended the excellent work of the high schools and their award.
- Mr.
Pack commented on the MMS FFA Banquet and also commended the school system
for these opportunities for students to have such hands-on experiences.
- Mr.
Fertig thanked the students and parents who were in attendance at the board
meeting. He also thanked Mr.
and Mrs. Pack for the making of the items for the Board breakfast in the
schools.
- Mr.
Park reported on the recent MHS Band Concert and Awards Banquet.
He noted that Thad Garrett and David Park both received awards.
- Mr.
Williams commended Matthew Martin for winning the M. A. Bean Athletic Award
for MHS. It was well deserved.
- Mrs.
Hammer announced the school selections for Teacher of the Year and that the
County recipient will be announced at the June 6th board meeting.
- Mr.
Whetzel reported that EHHS and MHS both have been recognized as West
Virginia Schools of Excellence for 2005.
This is an outstanding accomplishment.
The next meeting
of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for June 6, 2005 at 7:00
p.m. at the Hardy County Board of Education Office.
