The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education. SUMMARY
Members of the Board were provided copies of the book “A Framework for Understanding Poverty” by Dr. Ruby Payne. This will be a countywide book study by staff and the Board agreed to participate in the activity.
The Board reviewed and approved to be sending out for comment, Policies BDG - Public Participations in Board Meeting and BDFA - Use of Electronic Mail. Policy BDE - School Board Executive Session was reviewed and additional legal clarification is to be sought.
The MHS Grant was reviewed and communications from the teacher. It was noted that all information has been secured and the purchasing of items are proceeding.
Discussion was held on the use of EHHS Building. Trades Class to construct a portable classroom(s) for future use by Hardy County Schools. Mr. Pack requested that Mr. Miller attend a future Board meeting to go over the specifications.
The Superintendent gave an update on the use of facilities/keys at MHS. It was noted that unauthorized individuals are not to have keys or be in the building without prior permissions. A report on the gas line leak at MHS was provided and the history of the work done by the Athletic Boosters in the construction of the facility and upgrades.
Mr. Williams gave a report on the recent WVSBA Conference and the information he received regarding legal issues and state funding formula.
Public Comment:
Mr. Larry Salyers:
Ø Extended thanks for the information on bus inspections
Ø Expressed concerned that comments are not directed at an individual but due to his concern for the welfare of students
Ø Requested the salaries of selected Central Office personnel
Ø Request to examine the schools along with Mr. Williams
Mr. Matt Gapp:
Ø Reviewed the recent Bus Inspection report in detail
Ø Questioned the number of defects and the quality of work being done by the firm conducting State Inspections, responsibility of reporting of problems by bus drivers, and is their preventive maintenance work being done. The Board agreed to add this as an agenda item for the next meeting
Mr. Steve Gapp:
Ø Discussed his past experience as a mechanic
Ø Inquired as to if the Board can hire another individual trained in bus repair
Ø Was informed that efforts to handle this have been tried and are continuing

Mission Statement Accomplishments:
Ø Mr. Williams just received and read the WV Challenge Publication. Appreciated their concern for supporting the efforts of small counties.
Ø Mr. Funkhouser commended the professionalism of our law enforcement and their cooperation with Hardy County Schools
Ø Mr. Fertig extended recognition to everyone for their efforts as part of American Education Week. Commended the work of the American Legion and support of the Girls and Boys State Activities
Ø Mr. Pack thanked the Hardy County Sheriffs Department, Town of Moorefield and Wardensville Police, WV State Police and Hampshire County Sheriffs Department for their support of school safety
Ø Mrs. Hammer saluted our school staff and urged everyone to thank them for their work on behalf of students
Ø Mr. Whetzel thanked Mr. & Mrs. John Miller for their generous contribution to the Maxwell Scholarship Fund. Commended MES for its selection as a Title I Distinguished School for this year.
The next meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is schedule for December 05, 2005 at East Hardy High School.
