Regular School Board Meeting

The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education.  Official copies of the minutes may be obtained, once they are approved by the Hardy County Board of Education, by contacting Deedee Fridley, Executive Secretary to the Superintendent, 510 Ashby Street, Moorefield, WV  26836, phone (304) 530-2348 x236.

 

SUMMARY

 

The meeting began with presentations by two Moorefield Middle School teachers.  Mr. Roy Harper and members of his FFA demonstrated the woodsman events they participated in at the Virginia State Fair.  The team placed third, which was an outstanding accomplishment.  Mr. Terry Hardy demonstrated a website, using laptop computers that students use to identify leaves for their annual science project.  The Board commended both teachers for their innovation and commitment to education.

 

During the School Improvement Update Mrs. Whitecotton shared with the Board that Hardy County Schools has, once again, not been identified as a county in need of improvement under AYP.  She also presented information on the Higher Education report on college attendance rates, first year college achievement and college preferences.  The key points noted were that county scores and achievement met or exceeded state averages and the number of students required to take remedial coursework was below the state average.  Discussion was held on the need to still improve in these areas in order to insure the greatest opportunity for success for students.

 

In other actions:

 

Ø      The following policies were revised and approved for sending out for first reading:  BDD - Agendas, BDF - School Board Meeting Procedures and

            BEB - School Board Policy Adoption.  The Board also reviewed the WVSBA

      Model Policy on Board Operations and requested the Superintendent to collect

      their comments and prepare a draft for further review.

 

Ø      The Board approved Williamson Schriver for the providing of architectural services for the canopy and doors at MMS, pending agreement on fees.

 

Ø      Mr. Wade Armentrout presented the request on behalf of MMS and their LSIC to dedicate the Gymnasium and Track to William “Bill” Hunt.  Details were provided on the specific plans.

 

Ø      Discussion was held on the presentation to be made to the SBA in November.

 

Ø      Discussion was held on the scheduling of the November Board Meeting and it was agreed to hold this meeting on the 14th.

 

Ø      An update was provided on the MHS Grant and the status of purchases.  It was reported that all request have been addressed and the finance office is waiting for the additional items to be ordered, and for a copy of the actual grant application.  The Superintendent was requested to prepare a written request for a copy of this grant.

 

Ø      Discussion was held on the needs to provide whatever assistance possible to teachers and parents in efforts to increase the success of students in Mathematics.  Mrs. Whitecotton reported on information that is being secured, activities for parents, and that a countywide team is working on a five year plan for mathematics and the needs of teachers.  This will be reported at a later meeting.

 

Ø      Several student transfers were approved

 

 

 

Public Comments:

 

Larry Salyers:

Ø      Inquired as to the status of air conditioners which are part of the grant for MHS

Ø      Questioned the Casto-Technical Contract and was informed that a future meeting is being scheduled with their representative

 

Matt Gapp:

Ø      Several inquiries were made regarding the job description and requirements for the Director of Administrative Programs.  Was informed that the county has not had a “Supervisor of Maintenance” for over a year and did not fill the “Supervisor of Transportation” vacancy.  The Director is responsible for oversight and supervision of these areas

 

Steve Gapp:

Ø      Presented the Board information on the Weight Room at MHS and that the Band Boosters built it

 

Jackie Zirk:

Ø      Inquired as to why so many community people have keys to facilities and that custodians need additional keys to certain parts of the buildings.

Ø      Was informed that work is continuing on food bar needs for MHS

 

 

 

Kristi Stump:

Ø      Inquired as to the schedule for the School Resource Officer, was informed he does not have a set schedule, intentionally, and that he will on occasion visit schools unannounced

Mission Statements:

 

Ø      Mr. Williams commended Mr. Hardy for this energetic and committed efforts as a teacher, he does a great job.  Read sections of a letter commending Mr. Garry Moore for the work he did last year with the WV Westest Program.

 

Ø      Mr. Funkhouser commended Mr. Armentrout and Moorefield Middle School, they are off to a great start

 

Ø      Mr. Fertig commended the teachers for their great job and the MMS FFA for winning at Forestry Day at the Virginia State Fair.

 

Ø      Mr. Pack commended all the people behind the scenes who support the efforts of the football programs:  ticket sellers, refreshment stands, etc…

 

Ø      Mr. Park commended the MMS staff for their work and efforts to provide students with numerous activities such as the recent Halloween dance

 

Ø      Mrs. Hammer thanked Mrs. Vicky Fertig for her work as a VISTA Volunteer.  The recent Diversity workshop was excellent

 

Ø      Mrs. Whitecotton noted the presentation by Mr. Hardy demonstrated the tremendous growth in technology and teacher skills in utilization of computers as instructional tools.

 

Ø      Mr. Whetzel commended his new Executive Secretary, Deedee Fridley, for her hard work, willingness to learn and pleasant interaction with the public

 

 

The next meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for November 14, 2005 at Moorefield Middle School.

 

There will be a special meeting of the Board on November 7, 2005 beginning at 6:00 p.m. to address a student discipline hearing and an executive session to discuss a personnel matter.
