SUMMARY

The meeting began with the members of the Board and visitors expressing symphony for the death of Mr. Bill Hunt, Hardy County Schools Educator.  His dedication to students and enthusiasm for this profession will certainly be missed.

The Board addressed the following items:

Reviewed the Board Calendar for 2005-2006.  The Calendar identifies major actions addressed by the Board throughout the year.  Copies will be distributed throughout the school system.

An update on the cost of energy and its impact on the school system were presented.  At current prices the impact on the Budget will be in excess of $100,000.  The situation is being monitored and plans are being made to take the reasonable and necessary steps needed.  Restraint is being requested on the use of vehicles and travel, and energy audit of facilities will be conducted and the use of ‘bio-fuel’ for buses is being examined.

Enrollment reports show a total of 2295, which is down from last year’s second month enrollment of 2329.

The Board approved submission of the new Moorefield Intermediate School as the Needs Project for the SBA for 2005-2006.

The annual identification of critical teaching needs was approved.

The Superintendent presented his annual goals to the Board.  They address the areas of student achievement, fiscal responsibility and community relations.

Public Comment:

Ø      Brad Simmons provided an update on the work that he preformed as a temporary summer worker for the Hardy County Schools.

Ø      Larry Salyers requested information on the installation of window air conditioners at MHS, which were funded through a Legislative Grant.  He was informed that the electric capacity and wiring of the facility must first be examined and that the individual securing the grant prior to their submission had not checked this out.  Previous examinations have indicated extensive electrical service replacement and upgrades would be required for this to occur.

Ø      Custodian, Jackie Zirk, MHS, as a result of a Legislative grant, inquired if a new food bar was possible to be added to MHS cafeteria along with the items to be secured through the grant.
