SUMMARY

 

School Improvement Presentations:

 

¬         NCLB Westest Presentation:  Ms. Barbara Whitecotton presented the results of the 2005-2006 Westest results and status of each school with regard to achievement of AYP.  Results showed marked improvements throughout the school system with MES, MHS and EHHS again meeting or exceeding AYP requirements.  It was noted that EHEMS made AYP for the first time.  MMS did not meet the standards in one area (out of 8) for the school year.  In total 37 of the 38 different areas of measurement were achieved.  In addition, the Board was given information on the standards testing for Vocational Education, which also showed marked improvement.  The Board commented the schools and staff for their hard work.

 

¬         Highly Qualified Teachers:  Mrs. Sharon Hammer presented the results of the NCLB requirements for Highly Qualified Teachers.  The report showed that MES and MMS meet 100%, EHEMS at 99.5%, EHHS at 82.1% and MHS at 80.5%.  This is a county average for 92.4%.  The WV average was at 92.5%.  West Virginia was one of the two highest states in the USA in meeting these requirements.  Efforts to continue to secure certified teachers and/or provide training to achieve the 100% goals were discussed.

 

In Other Actions:

 

¬         Information on the estimated cost for HVAC and Electrical renovations were presented.  Overall estimated cost would be in the area of $800, 000 to $1,000,000.

 

¬         Transportation cost for field trips were discussed.  Information was presented on the impact of increases cost for such trips.  The Board requested additional information and the item be carried over until the next meeting.

 

¬         The Board received and review bids for propane gas.  Representatives of Southern States and Holtzman Oil were on hand to present their information on their bids.  After discussion the Board requested the item be held over until the next meeting.

 

¬         The Board received, and approved, a job description and proposal for a contracted Grant Writer for Hardy County.

 

¬         Information on the MHS plans for hot weather was presented.  The principal had formalized a plan for relocation of classes as requested and the providing of fans as needed.

 

¬         An update was provided on the plans to establish a Volunteer Committee for MHS.  The efforts will begin with the formulation of a committee of school and community personnel to begin the program.

 

¬         A report was given on school opening for 2006.  Information was provided on providing of supplies and materials, condition of facilities, summer work activities, transportation and personnel.  The preliminary enrollment projections show that enrollment has held steady in grades K-12/ projected 4-year-old enrollment may increase this number.

 

¬         Student transfer requests were approved.

 

Public Comments:

 

¬         Matt Gapp commended the effort of Mr. Doug Boswell at MHS.  Addressed the surplus sale of the oil tank by the school system.

 

¬         Steve Gapp addressed the contract for Casto-Technical with Hardy County Schools.  Requested information on travel and auto repairs from individual Board members.

 

Personnel Actions:

 

Employed:

¬         School Nurse, effective September 18th, recommended, but not hired.

¬         Bridget Billmeyer – Elementary Education – Grades 5-8 – EHEMS

¬         Stephanie Armentrout – Middle School Teacher  - Grades 5-8 – Math, transferred at her request; this vacancy will be filled by Janelle Murray who is certified in Elem.Ed/Math 5-9) - MMS

¬         Eric Vidischik – Secondary Teacher – Theater and Advanced Communication – MHS/EHHS, available the beginning of the second six weeks, we have a sub in that position at the start of school.

¬         Jeremy Simmons – Secondary Teacher – English/Language Arts – MHS, transferred at his request, we will have a long term sub in his position at MMS.

¬         Shirley Sherman – Substitute Teacher

¬         Kirsten Barr – Substitute Teacher

¬         Crystal Atkinson – Substitute Teacher

¬         Janielle Murray – Substitute Teacher

¬         Emily Sherman – Substitute Teacher

¬         Justin Evans – Substitute Teacher

All professional positions require the implementation of Accelerated Reader in the classroom.

All Instructional Aide position requires staff to be responsible for all health, lifting and transportation responsibilities, as needed.

 

Resignations:

¬         Kristy Rohrbaugh – Substitute Teacher

 

Postings:

¬         Hardy County Prek-K Coordinator – Independent Contract Position – Must have a Masters Degree; minimum of five years of successful experience teaching Prek-K, and must be available during school hours for classroom consultant work.  No fringe benefits or seniority attached to this position.  Up to 18 hours per week @ $20.00 per hour for 42 weeks.  One year only.

¬         Transportation Aide – Extra duty to ride with student before and after school.  Applicant responsible for all lifting, health and transportation responsibilities.  Day begins at Bean Settlement at 6:45 a.m., ride the bus to Old Mill Creek School, and return in the evening, as needed.  Salary based on hourly rate of pay, as service is provided.

¬         Varsity Assistant Football Coach – Moorefield High School

 

Continued Postings:

¬         English/Language Arts – MHS/EHHS, by semesters.  Must be willing to complete and utilize Accelerated Reader program in instruction (Currently with Joanne Perkins as a Long Term Substitute)

¬         Family and Consumer Science Teacher – MHS (Currently with Christy Stickley as a Long Term Substitute)

¬         Biology, Chemistry, General Science – MHS (Currently with Scott Hammer teaching Chemistry on a waiver, and a half day long term substitute)

 

Mission Statement Accomplishments:

 

¬         Mr. Red Funkhouser commended EHEMS for making AYP – great job!!

 

¬         Mr. Kenneth Pack thanked Mrs. Heishman for her coverage of recent Board meetings.

 

¬         Mr. Max Park commended the work of the EHHS Band, especially the efforts of the drum line.

 

¬         Mr. Ricky Perkins noted and commended the work of Cassandra Hall, volunteer at MHS.

 

¬         Mrs. Margaret Shriver commended the work done on the Westest and the excellent results.

 

¬         Mrs. Sharon Hammer commended the custodians for their work at the schools, and the central office staff for its effort to prepare for the opening of school.

 

¬         Ms. Barbara Whitecotton commended the teachers throughout Hardy County for their participation in staff development over the summer.

 

¬         Mr. Ronald Whetzel noted the efforts of everyone to get ready for the new school year – great job!!
