Reconvened and Regular School Board Meeting

April 18, 2006

SUMMARY

 

The session began with the mandatory reconvening meeting to address the Budget for 2006-2007.  A public hearing was held and there were no comments.  The Board approved the Budget as presented.

 

This meeting was then adjourned and the regular meeting was called to order.

 

Presentation:

Mrs. Diane Tusing, Stephanie Simmons and Olivia Taylor (student) presented information on the work being done in Differentiated Instruction.  Mrs. Tusing provided an overview of this instructional approach, which focuses on adjusting lessons to meet the various and diverse needs of students.  Mrs. Simmons presented specific examples of instructional techniques and Miss Taylor discussed how well she likes the different approaches.  The Board was most appreciative of this information and commended the presentations.

 

In Major Action:

The Board received and approved the recommendations of the Science and Health textbook committees for materials to be adopted.  Mrs. Whitecotton reviewed the process used and the reasons for the selection of the specific textbooks.  Appreciation was extended to the committee members.

 

The Board also reviewed the proposals for Bank services for Hardy County Schools.  After review of the proposals from local banks Summit Financial Services was selected to continue the services for the next three years.

Approved Policy BDE – Executive Session

 

Reviewed and approved for sending our for comment Policy GBOB – Tuberculin Exam

 

Policy GBM – Travel Regulations was held over until the next meeting

 

The Steering Committee for the new Moorefield Elementary School was approved and will begin work immediately.

 

A review of the availability and use of emergency phones and radios were conducted.

 

The Board received copies of the County Report Card for 2004-2005 that will be distributed with the next school report cards.

 

The Board reviewed information on items included on Excess Levies from other counties and discussed following up on this information.

 

Public Comments

 

Matt Gapp commended on drug usage in the schools, inquired as to the gas leak at MHS, inquired as to the operating procedures for evacuation of buildings.  He also commented on the role of Board Members.

 

Larry Salyers inquired as to status of actions regarding contacting fire marshal and Department of Environmental Protection. 

 

Steve Gapp commented on the role of the Board Members, gas leak at MHS, role of maintenance personnel.

Mission Statement Accomplishments

 

?          Mr. Funkhouser noted that the last attendance rate showed 97%.  Highest in a number of years.  Commended all personnel and Mr. Dave Wilbur, for their excellent work.

 

?          Mr. Park commended the efforts to incorporate Differentiated Instructions, an excellent way to make school educations, challenging and fun.

 

?          Mr. Fertig commended the East Hardy High Baseball team for their top ranking and 15-0 record.

 

?          Mr. Pack commended the textbook committee for their excellent work and the efforts of Mrs. Whitecotton.

 

?          Mrs. Hammer commended Olivia Taylor, a student a Moorefield Middle School, for her excellent student presentation to the Board.

 

?          Mrs. Whitecotton thanked the staff at Moorefield Middle School for their efforts to cooperate and collaborate in the implementation of Differentiated Instruction.

 

?          Mr. Whetzel reported on the presentation by Mrs. JoEllen Halterman, and the ninth grade students at EHHS, who presented a demonstration lesson, over the internet, to the Student Achievement Conference held in Charleston.

 

The next meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for May 1, 2006 at the Hardy County Board of Education Offices.
