SUMMARY

 

Board Actions:

 

The Board reviewed various bus purchase proposals and agreed to purchase two Mountain International Buses.

 

Policy ICH – Independent Studies / Virtual Schools and Policy GBLA – Service Personnel Evaluations were sent out for first reading.  Minor changes were related to clarification of reporting and title changes for certain positions.

 

An update was provided on the grounds keeping for Hardy County Schools.

 

It was reported that for 2005-2006 there were no Level IV Grievance for Hardy County Schools.

 

National Teacher Recognition day was discussed, and the County Commissioners are to be notified of our support and the recommendation that for Hardy County this day be named in honor of John A. Mathias.

 

Several student transfers were approved.

 

Public Comment:

 

Vic Shockey addressed the Board and commended them for their efforts to maintain the schools and suggested that the possibility of a contracted Grant Writer be explored to secure additional funding.

 

Rick Dolly addressed the Board and commended the employment of Doug Boswell and reported on the number of individuals interested in helping all schools, and especially Moorefield High School.  He suggested that efforts be put forth to organize a group of volunteers at MHS, and other schools, to assist.

 

Steve Gapp addressed the Board and wanted to know what was being done regarding gas leaks.  He was informed of the action steps that had been identified in the spring to check all lines, repair as necessary, and conduct a pressure test of all lines.

Mission Statement Accomplishments

 

Mr. Funkhouser: Thanked the individuals for their efforts to provide ideas to work together to get things done for Hardy County.

 

Mr. Pack:  Extended appreciation to transportation personnel for their input on bus needs.

 

Mr. Park Noted that the idea of utilizing volunteers was excellent, and we need to look for individuals who have skills that can be shared within the school system. 

 

Mr. Perkins:  Noted the evidence of the county helping itself is important to attracting future support.  He cited the work done at the old gym at MHS as an example.

 

Mrs. Shriver:  Commended the effort of the schools and community working together.  Commended Mr. Hardy of MMS for the recent article regarding his work at Eastern Community College.

 

Mrs. Hammer:  Reported that Mr. Harper has been chosen as a state finalist for teacher of the year. 

 

Mr. Whetzel:  Noted the work of teachers and administrators during the summer school programs and the number of students who, on their own, came to school to improve their skills.

 

The regular meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Hardy County Board of Education Offices on August 21, 2006.  There will be a special meeting on August 15th, 7:00 p.m., to address personnel, MIS project, and report of end-of-year close out.
