SUMMARY

 

Prior to the meeting the Board attended the 1st Grade Christmas Pageant.  Appreciation was extended by the Board for the excellent program.

 

Mr. Charlton Hilliard, on behalf of Voiture 40/8 presented recognition to the following teachers:  Sharon Auville, Vivian Carr, Allen Davey, Marie Rao, Barb Stickely and Betty Stickely.

 

Presentations:

 

JoEllen Halterman presented information to the Board regarding her attendance at the National Council of English Teachers Convention.  She reported on several of the speakers and excellent workshop she attended.  Mrs. Halterman will be sharing information with other teachers throughout the county.  The Board extended appreciation for her work and efforts to improve teaching.

 

School Improvement Presentation:

 

Ms. Barbara Whitecotton presented information on the longitudinal analysis of Hardy County Westest scores.  This is the comparison of the same group of students from one year to the next.  Overall the county results showed continued improvement each year and each school demonstrated improvements at most levels.

 

Other Business:

 

Moorefield Elementary School was recognized as a Title Distinguished School for the second year in a row.  This award is made of those schools that exceed AYP under No Child Left Behind and meet the additional requirements as established by the state Title I program.

 

Administrators and teachers have been working on Informational graphics regarding the school improvement process and efforts being conducted by Hardy County Schools.  These were presented to the Board by Ms. Whitecotton as to illustrate the overall focus of the school system regarding student’s achievement.

 

Public Comments:

 

Jane Yokum, as President of the MES Faculty Senate, shared with the Board a number of positives regarding the school.  Included was information on the student’s achievement, support of the PTO, school improvements, school safety and the dedication on the staff.

 

Personnel Actions:

 

Employed:

¬         Patrick McGregorInterim Middle School Principal – Moorefield Middle School – effective January 22, 2007 through June 2007.  This is a temporary re-assignment for the reminder of the 06-07 school term.  Mr. McGregor will assume his normal duties as Assistant Principal at MES July 1, 2007.

¬         Morgan Hill Substitute Teacher

¬         Nathan Walters Substitute Teacher

 

Resignations:

¬         Gloria Moore – Substitute Teacher, including extra duty assignments

¬         P.Ann Hess – Custodian at East Hardy High School, effective June 30, 2007, due to retirement

¬         Jeanette Keller – ˝ time Clerk at Moorefield High School, effective January 19, 2007, due to retirement

 

Request of Extension of Leave of Absence:

¬         Rebecca Fitzwater

¬         Linda Robb

 

Postings:

¬         Clerk II -  ˝ time, Moorefield High School, 200 day position, effective January 22, 2007

¬         Six (6) After School Educator positions – Moorefield Middle School, for 9 weeks beginning February thru May 2007.  This is for three days per week, 1.5 hours of employment at $20.00 per hour.  Preference given to MMS teachers.

¬         One After School Educator Migrant position – Moorefield Middle School, for 9 weeks beginning February thru May 2007.  This is for three days per week, 1.5 hours per day at $20.00 per hour.  Preference given to MMS teachers.

¬         Mentor Teacher for Spanish/ESL – Moorefield Schools

 

Mission Statement Accomplishments

 

¬         Mr. Ray Funkhouser commended the MES staff for their excellent Christmas Program.

 

¬         Mr. Ken Pack noted how much he has enjoyed the various band and choral performances and extended a special thank you to Mrs. Yokum.

 

¬         Mr. Max Park commended the MMS Choir and Band on their excellent performance.  Thanked Mr. Carlton Hilliard for his recognition of MES teachers and contributions to the school.

 

¬         Mr. Rick Perkins commended Mr. Leon Franklin and Deputy Brian Ward for their handling of a student situation.  They did a great job!

 

¬         Mrs. Margaret Shriver commended Mr. Eric Vidischick on the excellent play and the amount of work he has accomplished is such a short time.  Recognized all teachers for going above and beyond the line of duty in so many ways.

 

¬         Ms. Barbara Whitecotton thanked JoEllen Halterman for her willingness to go over and above, and her continue enthusiasm for her profession.

 

¬         Mr. Ronald Whetzel reported on the RESA VIII pilot program for mentor and beginning teachers utilizing email communications.  Local participants include Allen Sine and JoEllen Halterman.

 

The next meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Hardy County Board of Education Office on January 16, 2007.
