The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education. SUMMARY
Presentations:
¬ Staff and Students of East Hardy Early Middle School provided several presentations of the use of technology by students. These included: Miss Holstein, accompanying by 1st grade student, Drew Kelican demonstrating the use of the White Board, Mr. Alan Sine, accompanying by Tyler Kerr, a 8th grade student presentation a PowerPoint demonstration regarding a class project, Mrs. Ann Funkhouser, accompanying by Tyler Kerr, a 8th grade student demonstrated the technology to compose and play music, and Mr. Devin Hamilton, accompanying by two 6th grade students, Ashley Strawderman and Amber Hawkins, demonstrated how to incorporate dance into physical activity.
¬ Mr. Dave Wilbur provided an update to the Board on the requirements for Home School Instruction. Several questions were addressed. Mr. Wilbur was thanked for the excellent job he does as attendance director.
School Improvement Presentation:
¬ Differentiated Instruction: Ms. Barbara Whitecotton and the Board concluded their book study. A summary of the plan for implementation of this program into the school system was provided. The Board was appreciative of this opportunity.
In Other Actions:
¬ Health and Wellness Policy: A revised policy as recommended by the Heath and Wellness Committee was presented. Revisions were based upon input from staff, the committee and the Board Members. The revised policy was resent for public comments.
¬ Information on the items that qualify for submission as a Major Improvement Project was presented to the Board. The Board agreed to submit a project for $500,000 for electrical renovations and upgrades at MHS.
¬ Hannah Salyers, student at MHS, had requested to address the Board. She was informed that discussion on an individual personnel matter was scheduled for December 13, 2006 and would not be addressed by the Board at this time.
¬ The Board met in executive session at a parent’s request to discuss a student issue.
¬ A Student transfer request was approved.
Public Comments:
¬ Larry Salyers commented on actions of the board and employment of the superintendent.
¬ Rick Salyers commented on the MHS protest and behavior of staff.
¬ Matt Gapp questioned as to what method would be taken if he were to be removed from a Board meeting.
¬ Steve Gapp expressed concerns on the safety of students at MES and actions of the Board members.
¬ Sgt. Riley commented on efforts to resolved student/personnel issues.
¬ Moorefield High School Students, Danielle Gasparro, Taylor Stickley, Derek Hewellyn commented on protest at MHS and not being able to address personnel issues.
¬ Rodney Hutton commented on his child’s disciplinary action and work of board and superintendent.

¬ Interim Middle School Principal – Moorefield Middle School – effective January 22, 2007 through June 2007. Must have an endorsement in PK – 12 Administration, for the remainder of the 225 day school term.
¬ Middle School Teacher – English/Language Arts – EHEMS – Grades 5-8
¬ Secondary Teacher – English/Language Arts – MHS/EHHS – by semesters. Must be willing to complete and utilize Accelerated Reader program in instruction.
¬ Secondary Teacher – Family and Consumer Science Teacher – MHS
¬ Secondary Teacher – Biology, Chemistry, General Science – MHS
¬ Hardy County PreK-K Coordinator – Independent Contract Position – Must have a Masters Degree; minimum of five years of successful experience teaching Prek-K, and must be available during school hours for classroom consultant work. No fringe benefits or seniority attached to this position. Up to 18 hours per week at $20.00 per hour for 42 weeks. One year only.
Mission Statement Accomplishments:
¬ Mr. Ray Funkhouser recognized the East Hardy Early Middle students and staff and Mr. Dave Wilbur for the excellent presentations.
¬ Mr. Ken Pack reported on the great Christmas project at the McCoy Theatre. Noted the use of the theatre and the participation of school staff and students.
¬ Mr. Max Park reported on his reading to pre schoolers at MES and his visit to MMS for their Thanksgiving meal. Thanked everyone for his or her support to his family as a result of their recent fire.
¬ Mr. Rick Perkins commended Gary Shirk, student at MHS, and Charlotte Hill, teacher at MHS, for their work on the state nutrition grant. Also commended the MHS students for their new pep club.
¬ Mrs. Margaret Shriver commended the students and staff for the community Christmas Carol and the work of Betty Stickley.
¬ Mrs. Sharon Hammer thanked those adults who give up their time to help students. Reported on her great experience at EHEMS as part of the Reading First monitoring.
¬ Ms. Barbara Whitecotton thanked EHEMS for their hospitality at the Board Meeting.
¬ Mr. Ronald Whetzel commended the Board Members for their participation in the same book study as staff. This is a very unique action by the Board.
The next meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Moorefield Elementary School. There will be a special meeting to address a student disciplinary issue on December 12, 2006 at 5:00 p.m. at the Hardy County Board of Education Office and a special meeting to address an employee discipline issue on December 13, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. at the Hardy County Board of Education Office, since changed to MES gymnasium.
