The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education. SUMMARY
The meeting began with the swearing in of Mrs. Dixie Bean as a member of the Board to fill the vacancy of Mr. Hunter Williams. Her term will run through June 30, 2006. Mr. Ray Funkhouser was approved as Chairperson and Mr. Max Park as Vice-Chair until June 30, 2006.
The new School Resource Officer, Deputy Brian Ward, along with Deputy Bishoff and Laura Snyder, were present and introduced to the Board. Discussion was held on the goals of the program and how the Sheriffs Department and the Schools can work together for the welfare of students. Regular updates will be provided to the Board.
Mrs. Whitecotton concluded the book study on A Framework for Understanding Poverty. Concluding comments were received by each Board member highlighting the value of the book study and its value to education.
Board Agenda Items:
? Approved the LSIC agenda for their annual presentation to the Board during March;
? The Board reviewed the letter and comments from Dr. Steve Paine regarding the approval of the school system Five-Year Plan. Numerous excellent comments were received regarding the efforts that went into the development of the plan;
? The Board received the annual report on Grievance Activities. It showed that in the past two years there had been one Level IV grievance filed and it was ruled in favor of the Hardy County Board of Education;
? Discussion was held on the Architectural Services Interviews. They are scheduled for February 13, 2006 beginning at 6:00 p.m.;
? Policy BDE Executive Session was reviewed and held until the next meeting for further review;
? Discussion was held on the loss of heat in a portable at MES. Students were moved to an empty classroom inside the building while being repaired. All efforts to repair heat problems as quick as possible were considered;
? Appointed Mrs. Dixie Bean as the Board representative for the South Branch Center Governing Board;
? The Board was informed of the schools systems seeking of proposals for Bank Services;
? Discussion was held on the HVAC system at EHHS. Information was provided on the type of system, maintenance and repair activities, a report on the monitoring of actual temperatures over the past weeks, and the National Standards for temperatures;
? Discussion was held on the efforts to establish centralized menus and purchasing for school lunches. The goals of the effort were identified. In addition, discussion was held on the efforts to meet federal and state requirements in reducing fat content of meals. Concern was expressed regarding efforts to provide school choice options;
? The Board received a report on the status of existing underground fuel tanks and that they meet compliance with DEP standards;
? The recent roofing repair at MHS was discussed as to the location of the equipment used by the roofing company in making the repairs;
? The Board held an executive session to address personnel and student issues.

Mission Statement Accomplishments:
? Mr. Funkhouser congratulated the EHHS Girls Basketball team for their excellent record this year;
? Mrs. Bean commended on the recent book study by Board Members. Urged the Board to continue with these activities;
? Mr. Fertig was pleased to welcome Mrs. Bean back, she is a great addition to the Board;
? Mr. Pack enjoyed his visit to MES, found teachers working very hard and appreciated their efforts to do new things;
? Mrs. Hammer commended Deedee Fridley for her hard work and efforts;
? Mrs. Whitecotton commended the Title I teachers, especially in their efforts to review and upgrade their programs;
? Mr. Whetzel reported on the efforts of Mr. Russell, MHS, to involve students in an after school book study that he is conducting. This is an excellent example of putting the teaching of Ruby Payne into action.
The next meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for February 20, 2006, at the Hardy County Board of Education Office. The annual Board Retreat is scheduled for February 23, 2006.
