SUMMARY

 

Prior to the Board Meeting, officers of the East Hardy High School FFA met with the Board to honor the National Vocational Education Week.

 

Presentations:

 

Miriam Leatherman and Chris Merritt of the WV Extension Service presented information on the Community Assets program and survey.  The program, which is identified in the school system five-year plan, will serve to identify school and community assets that are needed to produce successful adults.

 

The Board reviewed and approved participation in the “Amber View” program.  This provides for 3-D pictures to be taken of students, during the days regular school pictures are taken.  With parents permission the information is stored on a secured server and are available to appropriate agencies if there is an Amber View for a missing child.  This is part of a state wide initiate for West Virginia.

 

An overview of Century 21 Learning Skills was presented.  This is a national initiative to prepare students with those skills necessary to be successful in the years ahead.  The Governor and State Superintendent have endorsed it.  The intent is to promote higher-level skill in students in the areas of critical thinking, technology application and problem solving.

?          Approved Williamson Shriver Architects as the Architectural Firm for the new intermediate school pending approval of fees;

 

?          Approved Policy ICJ – Taps at Military Funerals;

 

?          Reviewed Policy BDE – Executive Session – Made additional revisions, and will be reviewed at the next Board meeting;

 

?          Requested to meet with Butch Miller regarding the classroom at East Hardy High School;

 

?          Asked Mrs. Dixie Bean to serve as the Board Representative on the Calendar Committee;

 

?          Approved an out of county student transfer

 

Public Comments:

 

Information was provided to Mr. Salyers & Mr. Gapp on the following items:  Student and Personnel issues at MHS have been investigated and are being addressed; the fuel tank in question has been located; as it was disposed of as scrap, and returned; copies of the payment for ceiling repairs at MES were provided, dated October 2005,; Vehicle Use policy was presented showing what is permitted.

 

Additional Comments:

 

Mr. Salyers commented he has contacted additional state and national agencies regarding the fuel storage tanks.  Inquired as to the status of MHS air conditioners and electrical service.

 

Mr. Gapp commented on personnel matter involving MHS.

Mission Statement Accomplishments:

 

?          Mr. Ray Funkhouser commended the EHHS FFA for the great job they do and extended appreciation for the presentation to the Board;

 

?          Mrs. Dixie Bean noted the good meeting and communications at the meeting;

 

?          Mr. Philip Fertig commended the MHS Band for their excellent fund raiser.  The hoagie sale was very successful;

 

?          Mr. Ken Pack commended the students and staff for participation in the Science Fair.  Extended appreciation to local businesses for their support;

 

?          Mr. Max Park commended the work of and support of the Hardy County Extension service to Hardy County Schools;

 

?          Mrs. Sharon Hammer reported that Whitney Burns and Megan Mathias have earned National Merit Semi Finalist status – Congratulations!

 

?          Mrs. Barbara Whitecotton commended Vocational Teachers for their efforts to upgrade programs to meet new state requirements;

 

?          Mr. Ronald Whetzel thanked the Board for their support of Amber View – if it helps one child it is well worth it.

 

The next meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for March 06, 2006 at East Hardy Early Middle School.  The annual Board Retreat is scheduled for February 23, 2006 at the 1853 Restaurant.
