SUMMARY

 

The meeting opened with recognition of the teachers who had completed the Masters or Endorsement Program in Reading that has been through Marshall University and Hardy County Schools.  Mrs. Sharon Hammer, Director of Personnel, described the program and commended the dedication of the participants.  Of the 23 individuals involved the following were from Hardy County, Debbie Hubbard, Betty Stickley, Tammie Helmick, Amanda Riggleman, Amanda Hamilton, Rachel Whetzel, Michelle Holstein, Rachel Rumer, Janae Snapp and Marie Rao.

 

County Guidance Counselors presented to the Board an overview of the Guidance and Counseling programs offered in grades PK-12.  Information on the following was presented:  developmental guidance, career information, individual and group counseling and scholarship information.  Making the presentation was:  Elissa Rhodes, Jennifer Strawderman, Joseph Rice, Daniel Simmons and Shelba Vincell.  The Board extended appreciation for the work that they do to assist students.

 

The Board participated in the first session of their book study on “A Framework for Understanding Poverty”.  Mrs. Whitecotton led the session.

 

In major action:

 

?          The Board approved the first reading of Policy ICI – Taps at Military Funerals

?          Supported a resolution presented by the HCEA to support salary increases for educational personnel.

?          Discussed scheduling and location of their annual Board Retreat.

?          Received information on the cost for recommissioning of the MMS HVAC systems and the cost for a one year repair contract.

?          Discussed Board Members visits to schools and a schedule for visits.

?          Approved the changes in schedules for the EHHS trip to New York City from Easter Break to August.

?          Approved a student transfer request.

 

 

Added Agenda Items:

 

?          Requested information on the ordering of kitchen equipment.  As it was not available the information will be provided at the next meeting.

?          The Board directed the Superintendent to contact the State Fire Marshall regarding the nature and scope of inspections in Hardy County.

Larry Comment:

 

?          Noted he had requested information on contracts with Casto-Technical and had been informed by Superintendent that it was available but extensive. 
     Inquired if the Board had written the contracts and if bids were solicited.  Was informed the information is available for review.

?          Inquired if National Electrical Code was followed in the installation of water heaters at MES and are codebooks available in the Board Office.  Inquired if Casto-
     Technical had reviewed this situation.  Inquired if bids will be requested upon the completion of the current Contracts.

?          Follow up discussion was held on Fire Marshall Visits and water leaks at MHS.

 

Steve Gapp:

 

?          Questioned the number of “titled” positions.

?          Requested information on the mileage recorded for buses during the state inspection in the summer of 2005.

?          Inquired as to the status of the bus facility.

?          Discussion was held on a “policy” to require notification of the Board Office prior to calling 911.  Was informed by Mr. Williams that no such policies exist to
     his knowledge and if anyone could produce such a policy please do so.

?          School Program for Extended Day – 8 positions @ $20.00 per hour for 72 hours each in the second semester of the 2005-2006 school year and one position at 36 hours at MES.  Preference given to the faculty at the school with appropriate certification.  Preference given to appropriate certified faculty from each school.

?          School Program for Extended Day – 4 positions @ $20.00 per hour for 45 hours each at EHHS in the second semester of the 2005-2006 school year.  Preference given to appropriate certified faculty from each school

?          School Program for Extended Day – 2 positions @ $20.00 per hour for 45 hours each at MHS in the second semester of the 2005-2006 school year.  Preference given to appropriate certified faculty from each school.

Mission Statement Accomplishments

 

?          Mr. Williams:  Thanked Mrs. Whitecotton for her direction in the Book Study for the Board Members

 

?          Mr. Funkhouser:  Noted the excellent report from Guidance personnel and thanked them.

 

?          Mr. Fertig:  Commended the teachers for their work on the Masters in Reading Program and the all of the retiring teachers for their service to Hardy County
     Schools

 

?          Mr. Pack:  Commended the Guidance Counselors for their work in directing students and the efforts to serve the larger number of students each of them have

 

?          Mr. Park:  Thanked the Moorefield Examiner for their excellent articles and attention they give to education in Hardy County.  Commended Ms. Diane Hypes for
     her excellent job.

 

?          Mrs. Hammer:  Thanked the counselors and commended the 23 individuals who completed the reading program

 

?          Mrs. Whitecotton:  Thanked the entire teaching staff and the Board for their participation in the study of Ruby Payne’s book.

 

?          Mr. Whetzel:  Thanked Vicky Fertig for her work as a VISTA Volunteer.  Provided the Board with news release from the State Superintendent on the success of
     the state of West Virginia in the recent Quality Counts report.

 

 

The next regular meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for January 19, 2006 at Hardy County Board of Education Office.
