Regular School Board Meeting

June 5, 2006

SUMMARY

 

Prior to the meeting a reception was held for the Hardy County Teachers of the year as selected from each school.  Recognized were Roger Mongold – MES, Roy Harper – MMS, Henry Hodges – MHS, Cathy Willingham – EHEMS and Rodney Hardman – EHHS.  Mr. Roy Harper was selected by the County Committee to represent Hardy County as the Teacher of the Year.  Appreciation was extended to all winners for their contribution to Hardy County Schools.

 

Following this recognition, a reception was held for outstanding achievement of Students this past school year.   Recognized were:  Golden Horseshoe winners, FBLA State Winners, National Merit Scholars, Science Fair Regional, Writing Assessment, Young Writers, Math Field Day Regional and Attendance – with no absences in 4 years.  Appreciation was extended to these winners, and their parents, for this achievement.

 

In major action:

Approved the following policies:  GBM – Travel Regulations; ICK – Multicultural Education and GBOB – Tuberculin Examinations.

 

The Board reviewed plans for the Canopy Project at Moorefield Middle School and agreed to placed the project out for bids.

 

Revisions, based on changes in state guidelines, to policy JDJ – Student Attendance, were put out for comment.

 

The Board approved a surplus sale of excess school equipment and property for August.

 

In other actions:

Received an update on the MIS Construction Project.  The next meeting of the committee is set for June 8, 2006 at 3:00 p.m., Moorefield Middle School.

 

Representatives of the East Hardy High School FBLA provided the Board with an update on their financial status for the trip to Memphis, Tenn.  The Board agreed to receive an update at the next meeting to determine if additional financial assistance is needed.

 

The Board was informed that there would be a meeting at East Hardy High School on June 8, 2006 with the school personnel, architect and representative of the Hardy County Library to discuss proposed locations for the new classroom construction.

 

The Board was informed that the scrubber for East Hardy High School has been purchased and should arrive this week.

 

Ms. Barbara Whitecotton provided an update on the efforts to secure funding and begin a ProStart food program at East Hardy High School.

 

A training tape from the WVSBA was provided to the board for review.

 

The Board approved the need to maintain certified teachers.  After the state deadline for professionals to be released from their contract , July 5th, the Board may deny releasing an employee unless a certified teacher for the position can be found.

 

Public Comments:

Larry Salyers addressed the need and means to address air conditioning at Moorefield High School. 

 

Steve Gapp directed questions to Mr. Red Funkhouser regarding the recent information he received on maintenance of gas lines.  Discussed consolidation of the high schools in Hardy County and the need to address the leaky roofs.

 

Matt Gapp commented that the Moorefield Intermediate School was not needed and the funds should be directed to repairing roofs.

?          William “Will” Hunt – Bus Operator for Summer School in the East Hardy Attendance Area, beginning July 3 through July 29 (excluding July 4) beginning at 7:00 a.m. and ending at 2:00 p.m..

?          Debbie Wolfe – Temporary Summer General Handyman Helper – MES only – to work 20 days (160 hours) for $10.00 per hour, beginning June 12 through July 10, excluding holidays (paid by school grant)

?          Amy Eye – Temporary Summer General Handyman Helper – MES only – to work 20 days (160 hours) for $10.00 per hour, beginning June 12 through July 10, excluding holidays (paid by school grant)

 

Resignations:

?          Daniel Simmons – Varsity Boys’ Basketball Coach – EHHS

Request Leave of Absence:

?          Rachel Schetrom – requested one year leave of absence to accompany her husband to school at Wake Forest.  Leave granted based on ability to locate certified teacher for one year as of July 15, 2006

 

 

Continued Posting:  Temporary Summer Maintenance Workers:

?          Two temporary Summer General Handyman Helpers to work 20 hours (160 hours each) for $10.00 per hour beginning July 5, 2006.  Work weeks can be no longer than 40 hours per week.

 

New Posting:  Service Personnel:

?          Clerk II – EHHS – ½ time -  200 day employment term, effective August 23, 2006

 

Continued Posting until filled:  Service Personnel for the 2006-2007 school year:

?          Bus Operator/Mechanic I – only open to currently employed Hardy County Schools’ Bus Operator as this is a re-classification of a current position.  Will be required to do three hours of mechanical duties, excluding lunch and breaks within their regular bus run – 210 days employment – Salary Class F.

 

New Posting:  Professional Educators:

?          Elementary Teacher/Title I Reading/Math Specialist – MES – must be endorsed as a Reading Specialist and be certified to teach Elementary School

?          English/Language Arts – MHS/EHHS (by semesters, includes Theater/Advanced Communications)  Must be willing to complete training and implement use of Accelerated Reader in instruction)

 

School Board members were informed to submit their annual evaluation form to the Board President by June 7, 2006.  Evaluation will be conducted at the next meeting.

 

Mission State Accomplishments

 

Mr. Red Funkhouser appreciated the achievement of the students and support of their parents.  Commended EHHS baseball team for their successful season.

 

Mrs. Dixie Bean felt the special recognition for writing success, and the improvement over the past several years is commendable.

 

Mr. Philip Fertig noted that the activity he will miss the most is High School Graduations.  Always enjoyed the great kids and the annual proof of success of our school system.

 

Mr. Ken Pack congratulated the Class of 2006.  His first year as a Board Member was when these students entered the First Grade.  Noted the years and years of success by the nominees for Teacher of the Year.  Hardy County is fortunate to have them.

 

Mr. Max Park noted that of the Teachers of the Year, Mr. Roger Mongold and Mr. Roy Harper were former students.  Very proud of their accomplishments.

 

Mrs. Sharon Hammer noted that Mr. Roy Harper, Teacher of the Year, will do an excellent job in representing Hardy County at the state level.

 

Ms. Barbara Whitecotton thanked Mrs. Theresa Rudy for the great job she has done at the Central Office and extended welcome to Mrs. Diane Coffman as the new secretary.

 

Mr. Ronald Whetzel thanked all the individuals who helped to insure the success of the students who were recognized – it takes a great team to have that much success.

 

The next meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for June 12, 2006, at the Hardy County Board of Education Offices.
