SUMMARY

 

Presentations:

 

Ms. Barbara Whitecotton presented information on the upcoming Westest.  She reviewed the background of the test, testing conditions, security requirements, and accommodations permitted for certain students.  Discussion was held on the efforts of school personnel to insure parents are informed and students are prepared.  In conclusion she distributed samples of 10th grade test items for math, reading/language arts and science for Board members to see the different types and difficulty of the test items.

 

In major actions:

 

The school calendar, as recommended by the county committee, was presented and approved.  The calendar meets the expectations that have been set for the calendar and is in close alignment with the South Branch Vocational and Technical School calendar.

 

The received the financial audit for 2004-2005.  For the second year it showed no findings or recommendations.

 

In other actions:

 

Further information on an Excess Levy was distributed.  It included data on tax bases, current expenditures per student and options for use of levy funds.

 

An update on the recent gas leak in the boiler room at MHS and the bus accident in East Hardy was presented.  The Board informed that an inspection of all gas lines in Hardy County Schools would be conducted.  In addition, an effort to develop uniform procedures for addressing such emergencies throughout the school system, and in conjunction with Emergency Services will be undertaken.

 

The Board was informed that the SBA did not fund MIP request for a multi purpose room at Moorefield Elementary School.

 

Policy ICK – Multicultural Education was approved to be distributed for comment.

?          One Teacher – teach classes at Moorefield Middle School and assume additional duties as Summer School Director duties with $1000.00 stipend in addition to pay as a classroom  teacher.  Employment term from June 15 through August 4, 2006 (excluding July 4 and last week of July).  Preference given to faculty at the school.  Staff must be certified in Elementary/Middle School.

?          One Professional Educator – Reading First Summer School – East Hardy Early Middle School - $20.00 per hour for five hours daily, 8:00a.m. until 1:00p.m., including planning, beginning July 3 through July 29, 2006, excluding July 4.  Preference given to teachers at the school.  Staff must be certified in Elementary Education.

?          One Professional Educator – Reading First Summer School – East Hardy Early Middle School - $20.00 per hour for five hours daily, 8:00a.m. until 1:00p.m., including planning, beginning July 3 through July 29, 2006, excluding July 4.  Additional Supervisory Duties for Reading First with an additional $500.00 stipend.  Preference given to teachers at the school.  Staff must be certified in Elementary Education.

?          One Professional Educator - School Improvement – East Hardy Early Middle School - $20.00 per hour for five hours daily from 8:00a.m. until 1:00p.m. including planning, beginning July 3 through July 29, 2006, excluding July 4.  Preference given to teachers at the school.  Staff must be certified in Elementary Education.

?          One Professional Educator – School Improvement – East Hardy Early Middle School - $20.00 per hour for five hours daily, 8:00a.m. until 1:00p.m., including planning, beginning July 3 through July 29, excluding July 4.  Additional duties as Director of the Summer Program with $1000.00 stipend.  Preference given to teachers at the school.  Staff must be certified in Elementary Education.

 

Summer Service Positions:

?          Two Bus Operators for Summer School in Moorefield Attendance Area, beginning June 19 to August 4, 2006, excluding July 4 and the last week of July, beginning at 7:00a.m. and ending at 2:00p.m.

?          Two Bus Operators for Summer School in East Hardy Attendance Area, beginning July 3 through July 29, 2006, excluding July 4, beginning at 7:00a.m. and ending at 2:00p.m.

Temporary Summer Maintenance Workers:

?          Two Temporary Summer General Handyman Helpers to work 20 days (160 hours each) for $10.00 per hour, beginning July 5, 2006 (work weeks can be no longer than 40 hours per week).

Mission Statement Accomplishments:

 

?          Mr. Funkhouser congratulated the EHHS baseball team for their 21 wins and top ranking in the state.

 

?          Mrs. Bean commended Mr. Bill Howdyshell, Hardy County Bus Operator, for his actions during the recent bus accident and commended the bus drivers of Hardy County for their outstanding efforts to transport students safely.  Commended rescue personnel throughout the county for their help.

 

?          Mr. Fertig committed that he recently attended the MHS Band Concert and stated it was excellent.  Noted that a large number of Hardy County students participated in the recent production at the McCoy Theatre.

 

?          Mr. Pack extended his appreciation to the other candidates running for the Board of Education; good individuals are needed to serve on the Board.  Noted that Melissa Hill, student at EHEMS, received state recognition in a recent pictorial history contest – Congratulations!

 

?          Mr. Park commented on his recent visit to Moorefield Elementary School and how much he enjoyed the visit with the students and teachers.  Also commented on the excellent performance by the Moorefield Middle School Band.

 

?          Mrs. Hammer reported on the recent lunch she had with the students at EHEMS, it was very delightful and informative.

 

?          Ms. Whitecotton commended Mrs. Roberson and Mrs. Kelican as they prepare to attend the National FBLA competition.  They are doing an excellent job.

 

?          Mr. Whetzel thanked all individuals who are working to prepare for the State Board of Education visit on May 11, 2006.  They are doing a great job and it should be a good experience for these individuals.

 

 

The next meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for May 15, 2006, at the Hardy County Board of Education Office.
