SUMMARY

 

Student Presentation:

 

¬         The MMS Choir, under the Direction of Mrs. Jane Yokum, presented a selection of patriotic songs, which were excellent.  They also gave a brief preview of the upcoming Christmas Concert.  The Board commended the teacher and students for their excellent presentation.

 

School Improvement Presentation:

 

¬         Differentiated Instruction Book Study:  Ms. Barbara Whitecotton continued the Board book study with Board members identifying key questions they had in their recent readings.  Ms. Whitecotton led discussion on each area.  In addition, Ms. Whitecotton showed the Board how palm pilots are being utilized by the schools to conduct ‘walkthroughs” (brief and structured observations) of the Differentiated Instruction process.

 

Board Actions:

 

¬         A guideline for day trips by bus operators was reviewed and approved.  Included were parameters for day trips, use of a volunteer system for assigning trips, and identification of certain trips, which were to be paid by the Board.

 

¬         The Board received an update on the Moorefield Intermediate School project.  They reviewed interior plans and a conceptual drawing for the exterior.  They were informed that the SBA has reduced the size of the Physical Education space to 1800 square feet.  The next steps involve preparing of detailed site and building plans for the SBA’s approval.

 

¬         The Board approved the annual identification of Critical Needs.  These are the professional areas, which are in greatest need in the county, and for which state reimbursement for teachers taking classes would be reimbursed.

 

¬         The Board reviewed and approved WVDOE waiver request for AP History, AP Literature and College English.

 

¬         An update on the use and distribution of ID Badges for all staff was given.  Included was information that all regular employees may use their ID Badges for free admission to any Hardy County Schools Extra-Curricular Event.

 

¬         An update was provided on the status of emergency generators at each school and efforts to secure grant funding to install larger capacity generators in the event of an emergency.

 

¬         An update was provided on the effort, in cooperation with the Town of Moorefield and Moorefield Police Department, on the efforts to secure funding for a second School Resource Officer.

 

¬         Discussion was held on the organization and purpose of the County Concerns Committee.  This is the group for representatives of school faculty senates and personnel organizations who hold regular meetings with the Superintendent.

 

¬         Several Out-of-County Student transfers were approved.

 

Public Comments:

 

¬         Larry Salyers commented on the Board members seeking public input on decisions, action of Board members and the status of drop-outs and teacher resignations.

 

¬         Steve Gapp commented on students leaving school grounds, and the Superintendent and work of the Board members.

 

¬         Mr. Michael Bobo commented on efforts to address students leaving school grounds.

¬         Hardy County Prek-K Coordinator – Independent Contract Position – Must have a Masters Degree; minimum of five years of successful experience teaching Prek-K, and must be available during school hours for classroom consultant work.  No fringe benefits or seniority attached to this position.  Up to 18 hours per week at $20.00 per hour for 42 weeks.  One year only.


Mission Statement Accomplishments:

 

¬         Mr. Red Funkhouser commended Mr. Wade Armentrout and the MMS Choir for their excellent performance.  Noted that Mr. Jeff Orndorff, Hardy County resident, was recently recognized by WVU.

 

¬         Mr. Max Park commented on the excellent patriotic songs by the MMS Choir.  Reported that the Poultry Association will be providing a $500 award, to an FFA team that wins the WV State Poultry Judging Contest, to help defray cost to attend the National Competition.

 

¬         Mr. Kenneth Pack thanked the MHS staff that assisted the preschooler from Moorefield Elementary School.

 

¬         Mr. Rick Perkins noted the value off athletics in supporting the school academic programs and congratulated the great job of sportsmanship by the students of MHS and EHHS.  Congratulated EHHS football team for their state playoff appearance and MHS for their PVC Championship.

 

¬         Mrs. Margaret Shriver thanked the Music and Band teachers throughout the County for their excellent job – especially MMS Choir.

 

¬         Mrs. Sharon Hammer commended our coaches and students for their fine job.  Commended Debbie Wolfe, substitute custodian, for the great job she does.

 

¬         Ms. Barbara Whitecotton commended the teachers who attended the Differentiated Instruction Meetings, much of it on their own time.  They are doing a great job.

 

¬         Mr. Ronald Whetzel noted that it was American Education Week and invited all Board members to visit a school and have lunch.  Thanked Mr. Rick Dolly for his efforts to secure the volunteer paving at MHS, and especially Darwin Simmons.

 

The next regular meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at East Hardy Early Middle School.  There will be a special meeting to address a student discipline case on November 14, 2006 at 5:00 p.m. at the Hardy County Board of Education Office.
