SUMMARY

 

Presentations:

 

¬         21st Century Learning Program – The Board was provided with a sampling of the technology skills being taught to our students was provided.  These included: Mr. Josh See and Mrs. Charlotte Hill on 21st Century Learning Skills using technology including a “White Board” and a Projector.  In addition, three of Mr. See’s students, John David Judy, Zachary Wolfe and Nathan Timbrooke gave a presentation using GPS navigational devices.  With the close of the presentation, Brain Sherman and Justin Cleaver, business managers of the MHS Yearbook and students of Moorefield High School gave a presentation on PowerPoint about their business plan in the library, led by Mrs. Traci Haukland, advisory for the yearbook.

 

¬         The Board continued their book student on Differentiated Instruction led by Ms. Barbara Whitecotton.

 

Business Items:

 

¬         Mr. Ronald Whetzel and Mrs. Beverly Coppe presented information regarding this revised site plans for the new Moorefield Intermediate School.  This revised plan allows the building to be relocated on the site to allow for parking for the Intermediate School and outdoor space for the Middle School.  This plan will be sent to the SBA for approval.

 

¬         Mrs. Beverly Coppe then presented information on a staffing meeting held with the architects and potential staff members on the interior furnishings of the building on October 3, 2006.

 

¬         Mr. Ronald Whetzel reviewed previous information presented regarding the deeds to the Durgon School Property.  Mr. Ronald Whetzel stated that he is willing to work with family members who are willing to undertake the cost of the deed search and that he continues to work with individuals in the community to maintain the building.

 

¬         Ms. Barbara Whitecotton presented information on the completed Five-Year Plan for the current school year.  The Board will conduct further review of the document and as the year progresses may make modification.

 

¬         Mrs. Sharon Hammer, a member of the community ASSETS group, presented preliminary survey results to the Board.  She reported that the committee would begin work on looking at the issues discussed with various community organizations.

 

¬         The Board approved continuation of the Lease for one year for the Lost City School property as a community center to Mrs. Gladys Lloyd.

 

¬         Mr. Ronald Whetzel reported on a re view by the County Crisis Team, which met following the recent incidents in schools in the nation.  Mr. Whetzel commended Deputy Bryan Ward on his work in this area.  He will be providing “mock” hostage drills in the schools when students are not present.  The following items were reviewed:

 

¬         A schedule of visits by the Moorefield Police Department’s drug dog to all sites.

¬         Review of the monitoring of cameras and video equipment.

¬         Completion of identification badges on October 30th for all staff members, volunteers and Board Members

¬         Crisis plans are being reviewed and will be discussed at a countywide meeting on October 26th.

¬         Disaster alert radios have been provided from the office of Homeland Security.  Mr. Silliman has provided training on their use.

¬         Joseph Rice – To teach Migrant children in the After School program at MES beginning October 2, 2006 for six weeks, two semesters, Ύ hour a day, three times a week at $20.00 per hour.  Funded through Federal Grant Migrant monies.

¬         Allen Sine (Jessica Butcher) – Mentor Teacher – Elementary - EHEMS

¬         Michele Pillar (Bridgett Billmeyer) – Mentor Teacher – Elementary – EHEMS

¬         JoEllen Halterman (Janelle Murray) – Mentor Teacher – High School Math – EHHS/MHS

¬         Tony Russell (Eric Vidischik) – Mentor Teacher – High School English – MHS

¬         Bill Landis – Extra Duty Bus Operator – Mid Day run to the SBVCTC at $25.00 per day, as needed.

¬         Ritchie Baldwin – Assistant Girls Basketball – MHS

¬         Hardy County Prek-K Coordinator – Independent Contract Position – Must have a Masters Degree; minimum of five years of successful experience teaching Prek-K, and must be available during school hours for classroom consultant work.  No fringe benefits or seniority attached to this position.  Up to 18 hours per week at $20.00 per hour for 42 weeks.  One year only.

Mission Statement Accomplishments:

 

¬         Mr. Ray Funkhouser toured Moorefield High School prior to the meeting and found it very attractive.  Commended the East Hardy High School 9th grade Volleyball team for its 14-0 season.  This includes playing a number of AAA schools!

 

¬         Mr. Kenneth Pack commended the staff at Moorefield High School for hosting the Employee Wellness Day.  It was a great event.

 

¬         Mr. Max Park noted that at the recent Career Development Day at WVU the students of MMS placed second, EHHS placed 8th overall, MHS placed 15th or 45 schools and Ryan Judy was an individual state winner.

 

¬         Mr. Rick Perkins note that Mrs. Charlotte Hill has been an outstanding teacher and innovator for over 20 years.  Thanked Mr. Whetzel and his staff for bring Hardy County to the forefront in technology use.

 

¬         Mrs. Margaret Shriver noted how proud she was of Hardy County Schools when MHS and EHHS bands joined together in playing at the recent football game.  Noted her appreciation for our teachers as they meet the new requirements of teaching the 21st Century.

 

¬         Ms. Barbara Whitecotton thanked Kathy Hardy for her representation of Hardy County Schools at the recent state Title I meeting.  Commended Charles Landes, computer technician, for his efforts in keeping our school system technology up and running.

 

¬         Mrs. Sharon Hammer thanked the County Community Assets Committee for their hard work and also thanked the county Teacher Recruitment Task Force for efforts to support hiring new teachers.

 

¬         Mr. Ronald Whetzel challenged all Board Members and visitors to participate in National Read-to-me-Day on November 19th.  Sign up to visit a school and read to a group of students.

 

The Board will conduct a training session Thursday, October 19, 2006 and a Special Meeting Work Session, in conjunction with Mineral County Board of Education, on Friday, October 20th at Canaan Valley.  The next regular meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for October 30, 2006 at East Hardy High School.
