SUMMARY

 

Board Members attended the viewing of Joshua Kimble, student, prior to the Board Meeting.  It was requested that the items related to School Improvement be carried over until next meeting.

 

In Other Actions:

 

¬         Board Members requested additional time to review the information on the Bus Drivers request regarding mid-day bus runs.

 

¬         An enrollment update was provided.  Based upon current enrollment, and depending on the weighting given to students in the four-year program, it appears overall enrollment will increase between 30 and 50 students.

 

¬         School Volunteers for MES, EHEMS and MHS athletics were approved as presented.

 

¬         Several student transfers were approved.

 

Public Comments:

 

¬         David Redmon presented comments regarding transportation issues, policies and payment rates for trips.

 

¬         Steve Gapp presented comments regarding maintenance, transportation and Board Members responsibilities.

 

Personnel Actions:

 

Employed:

¬         Roscoe Crites – Extra Duty Mid-Day Bus Run to SBVCTC from Moorefield High School and return, $3500.00 per year, effective October 3, 2006.

¬         Janet Weatherholt – Teach Migrant children in the After School Program at MES, beginning October 2, 2006 for six weeks, two semesters, 1.5 hours per day, three times a week at $20.00 per hour.  Funds provided through Federal Migrant monies.

¬         Sharon Auville/Vivian Carr – Teach Migrant children in the After School Program at MES, beginning October 2, 2006 for six weeks, two semesters, 1.5 hours per day, three times a week at $20.00 per hour.  Funds provided through Federal Migrant monies – this is a shared position by semester.

¬         Jim Champ – Clerk of the Work for Moorefield Intermediate School

Must have three years experience in Hardy County Schools and be assigned to the same school as the Beginning Teacher.  Also, must attend evening training sessions with new teacher.  Mentors will receive $600.00 stipend for the year.

¬         English/Language Arts – MHS/EHHS, by semesters.  Must be willing to complete and utilize Accelerated Reader program in instruction.

¬         Family and Consumer Science Teacher – MHS

¬         Biology, Chemistry, General Science – MHS

¬         Hardy County Prek-K Coordinator – Independent Contract Position – Must have a Masters Degree; minimum of five years of successful experience teaching Prek-K, and must be available during school hours for classroom consultant work.  No fringe benefits or seniority attached to this position.  Up to 18 hours per week at $20.00 per hour for 42 weeks.  One year only.

 

References and Background Checks are required on all newly hired personnel

 

Mission Statement Accomplishments:

 

¬         Mr. Ray Funkhouser commended Bus Drivers for their hard work

 

¬         Mr. Kenneth Pack requested that a paper written by Joshua Kimble be submitted as part of the Board Record in memory.

 

¬         Mr. Max Park reported on his sons visit to Mr. Storm, a valuable learning experience.

 

¬         Mr. Rick Perkins noted that he has spent his professional life caring about students; the loss of Joshua Kimble is such a tragedy.

 

¬         Mrs. Margaret Shriver extended thanks to Mr. Douglas Hines and Mr. Shebla Vincell for their efforts in assisting students during the lost of Joshua Kimble.

 

¬         Ms. Barbara Whitecotton commended Mr. Douglas Hines for his Leadership during this time of sorrow.  Shared a positive from Mrs. Sharon Hammer that the first month report for the state showed 500 errors state wide, and not a single one was from Hardy County.  Commended Mrs. Joyce Alt and all the school personnel who made it possible.

 

¬         Mr. Ronald Whetzel extended appreciation to all the caregivers, counselors and ministers who responded to the needs of students at MHS over the past days.

 

The next regular meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Moorefield High School on October 16, 2006.
