The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education. SUMMARY
Presentations:
¬ MHS Gym Dedication: Mrs. Mary Harper approached the Board regarding the dedication of the old gym at MHS to the memory of Johnny Paugh. Mr. Paugh was a distinguished and well respected educator and coach, including the first state basketball championship for MHS. The Board supported this request and agreed to work with her on plaque and picture of the championship team.
¬ Five-Year Plan: Ms. Barbara Whitecotton presented an update on the status of the five-year plan for 2006-2007. Information was provided on the goals, objectives and strategies for this upcoming year. The County Steering Committee will be meeting to finalize this plan.
In Other Actions:
¬ Discussion was held on the propane gas bids. Included were the requirements of the bid process and state accounting regulations regarding bids. The Board directed that legal review be conducted to provide additional clarification.
¬ Bus transportation cost for 2006-2007 were discussed. Information was provided on the actual cost for drivers salary; actual miles traveled by schools and organizations, the state reimbursement schedules and amounts, and projected cost for the upcoming year. The Board approved the rate of $1.70 per mile and $18.00 per hour for the upcoming year.
¬ Policy ICH Virtual Schools and Policy GBLA Service Personnel Evaluations were approved as presented.
¬ Mr. Ray Davy presented information to the Board on a fuel savings device Energy Cell for school buses. He was informed that this would require West Virginia Department of Education approval and the request should be forwarded to their attention.
¬ Summit Insurance agent Bruce Kesner, was appointed as the Boards Agent of Record for Workers Compensation.
¬ The Superintendent presented information on the opening of school. Enrollment has shown an increase, partly due to the enrollment of four-year olds.
¬ Policy JFE Student and Staff Wellness Policies on Physical Activity and Nutrition, as required by the state, was approved for first reading.
¬ The East Hardy High School Spanish trip was approved for spring break 2007.
¬ Several student transfers were all approved.
Public Comments:
¬ Larry Salyers commented on the bidding system and requested the Board review State Law 18-0-3A.
¬ Steve Gapp inquired as to information he had previously requested from individual Board Members, discussed school roofs, and requested information from individual board members regarding travel and auto repairs.
Personnel Actions:
It was requested that the review of the Superintendents goals be conducted at a Special Meeting on September 18, 2006.

¬ Hardy County Prek-K Coordinator Independent Contract Position Must have a Masters Degree; minimum of five years of successful experience teaching Prek-K and must be available during school hours for classroom consultant work. No fringe benefits or seniority attached to this position. Up to 18 hours per week at $20.00 per hour for 42 weeks. One year only.

Postings Extra Duty Contracts After School Teachers:
¬ Six (6) Teachers to teach After School Program at MMS beginning September 26 November 29, 2006, for 1.5 hours per day, three times a week at $20.00 per hour. Preference given to teachers at MMS. Funding provided through Title I School Improvement.
¬ Six (6) Teachers to teach After School Program at EHEMS beginning October 1 May 15, 2006 for 1.5 hours per day, three times a week at $20.00 per hour. Two positions at Mathias area, two positions at East Hardy Early Middle and two positions either at Wardensville or East Hardy Early depending on enrollment. Preference given to teachers at EHEMS. Funds provided through Title I School Improvement monies and Reading First monies.
¬ One (1) Teacher to teach Migrant Children in After School Program at MMS beginning October 2, 2006 for six weeks for two semesters for 1.5 hours per day, three times a week at $20.00 per hour. Preference given to teachers at MMS. Funds provided through Federal Migrant monies.
¬ Five (5) Teachers to teach Migrant Children in After School Program at MES beginning October 2, 2006 for six weeks for two semesters for 1.5 hours per day, three times a week at $20.00 per hour. Preference given to teachers at MES. Funds provided through Federal Migrant monies.
¬ One (1) ESL/Teacher to teach Migrant Children in After School Program at MES beginning October 2, 2006 for six weeks for two semesters for 1.5 hours per day, three times a week at $20.00 per hour. Preference given to teachers at MES. Funds provided through Federal Migrant monies.
¬ One (1) Teacher to teach Migrant children in After School Program at MES beginning October 2, 2006 for six weeks for two semesters for Ύ hour a day, three times a week at $20.00 per hour. Preference given to teachers at MES. Funds provided through Federal Migrant monies.

¬ Mr. Ray Funkhouser commended EHEMS for meeting ATP, great job! Thanked everyone for getting the school year off to a great start.
¬ Mr. Kenneth Pack Noted that school started well.
¬ Mr. Max Park Reported on the open house at MMS and how well it went. Especially noted the presence of bus drivers to meet parents. Proud of the Hardy County Board for the luncheon they prepare for the staff.
¬ Mr. Rick Perkins Recognized the bus drivers for the vital roll they play within the school system, they are to be commended.
¬ Mrs. Margaret Shriver reported on the MHS football game and how impressed she was with the quality and enthusiasm of the band.
¬ Mrs. Sharon Hammer reported on the school celebration at EHEMS in recognition of reaching AYP. A great day!
¬ Ms. Barbara Whitecotton noted the one year she has worked in the School Board Office and how much she has learned. Commended Mr. Wade Armentrout for his great job at MMS under difficult situations.
¬ Mr. Ronald Whetzel recognized Mrs. Sandra Breighner for her years of dedication to Hardy County Schools and congratulated her on her retirement.
The next regular meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Hardy County Board of Education Office on September 25, 2006. A Special Meeting is called on September 18, 2006 at 7:00 p.m.
