SUMMARY

 

Presentations:

 

?          Financial Report / Efficiency Study:  Mrs. Burgess and Mr. Whetzel presented information on the following:

Ø      Check Register:  Information on options was provided.  The Board approved the format for monthly information to be provided to the Board;

Ø      Fiscal year Closeout:  Full completion is expected for early September.  The expected deficit is approximately $290,000.

Ø      Efficiency Study:  Finance:  Information was provided on the direct impact of reduction in special education students on funding, resulting in exceeding state personnel formulas.  Several recommendations from the state department were presented for consideration in the areas of energy conversation, bus route consolidation, and increasing participation in hot lunch program.

 

            In addition to the above Mrs. Nancy Sisk, Mrs. Sherry Barb and the cooks of Hardy County

            were commended for their recognition by the West Virginia Department of Education for

            effective operation of the food service program.

 

In Other Actions:

 

?          The School Opening schedule for 2007 was presented.

?          An update was provided on the MIS Project.  This included:

Ø      Results of the archeologist study which has found no further evidence of archeological sites;

Ø      Sewer service update which reported that alternatives exist for sewer service to MIS and the work being proposed on Caledonia Drive will not cause a delay or problem with the MIS facility.

Ø      Construction status is ahead of schedule

 

?          MES Roofing project was discussed and the SBA guidelines were reviewed.

?          Milk Bids for 2007-2008 were approved for Shenandoah Pride.

?          Eastern WVC&TC annual contracts were approved.

?          A special work session was scheduled for August 13, 2007 to review the Community Involvement Program.

?          Several Student transfer request were approved.  All transfers contingent upon completion of transfer/enrollment information and principal’s review.

 

Public Comments:

 

?          Larry Salyers commented on role and responsibilities of Board members and his petitions.

?          Rodney Hutton requested information on the status of his request for information.   He was informed it has been available through the Superintendent’s Office.

?          Luther Whetzel inquired as to how school supplies are provided, involvement of parents, water system at East Hardy, fire alarms at East Hardy.

   Professional Educators:

?          Kathy Hardy – ½ Assistant Principal, Moorefield Elementary School with 210 days and Administrative Index increment

?          Nick Watts – Professional Extra Duty Contract, Planning period buyout at Moorefield High School for Drivers Education for one semester at $1000.00 per 30 minutes.

?          Jamin Hershberger – Middle School Teacher, Math, Grades 5-8, Moorefield Middle School, transfer back at her request

?          Christina Stickley – Title I Reading & Math Teacher, Moorefield Middle School

?          Tara Dearing – Elementary Teacher, Grade Two, East Hardy Early Middle School, Reading First Classroom

?          Donna Bodkin – Middle School Teacher, Grade 5, Moorefield Middle School

 

   Service Personnel

?          Sandy Kline, Rebecca Fitzwater, Gelia Ours, Rhonda “Susie” Dolly, Eileen “Rosie” Mongold – (5) Five Supervisory Special Education Aides II at Moorefield Elementary School, includes all health and transportation needs

?          Rhonda Kesner – Supervisory Aide at Moorefield High School, includes all health and transportation needs

?          Kathy Beasley, Anne Webster – (2) Two Supervisory Special Education Aides II at East Hardy Middle School, includes all health and transportation needs

 

   Extra Duty Transportation Aides:

?          Stephanie Vance – Trip #1, Meet bus at Walnut Bottom to assist in transportation of handicapped students to Moorefield Schools, and return home in the afternoon, includes all health responsibilities, must be able to meet regular employment schedules.

?          Rebecca Strawderman – Trip #2, Meet bus at Mathias Fire Hall to assist in transportation of handicapped students to East Hardy Schools, and return home in the afternoon, includes all health responsibilities, must be able to meet regular employment schedules

 

   Bus Operators:

?          Melvin Shook – Route 29 Sperry’s Run, Lower & Upper of Arkansas and portion of North River Rock Oak Road, Needmore Road, portion of Rt. 259 from Rt. 29 to Baker and Old Baker Run Road, with minor adjustments either way, transferred at his request, effective August 22, 2007

?          Rodney Teets – Dove Hollow, Strawderman Hollow, Mongold Road, Grover Smith Hollow with minor adjustments, transferred at his request, effective September 2, 2007

?          John Smouse – Caldwell Hollow, Gap Run, Lower & Upper Pine Road, Rt. 55, Needmore, Rock Oak Road with minor adjustments either way, effective August 22, 2007

 

   Extra Duty Bus Run:

?          Roscoe Crites – Vocational School bus run, morning bus run from MHS to SBVCTC at 8:25 a.m. and return at approximately noon, $3500.00 per year, must be able to meet regular schedule

On the motion of Mr. Rick Perkins, seconded by Mr. Max Park, the Board agreed to appeal to the Circuit Court of Hardy County, the level four grievance decision regarding Haukland vs. Hardy County Board of Education.

Mission Statement Accomplishments:

 

?          Mr. Ray Funkhouser commended the work of the Food Service Supervisors and the staff for their state recognition.

 

?          Mr. Max Park congratulated all food service personnel for their work.

 

?          Mr. Rick Perkins noted the excellent work being done in getting schools ready and commended maintenance and custodians.

 

?          Mrs. Margaret Shriver thanked Mrs. Burgess and the finance department for their excellent help.

 

?          Mr. Ronald Whetzel congratulated, Janet Sisler, for her selection as a finalist for the WV State Teacher of the Year.

 

The next regular meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Hardy County Board of Education Offices on August 20, 2007.
