The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education. SUMMARY
Reconvened Meeting:
This is a required meeting to address budget issues. The Board reviewed the current fiscal status, approved the state levy rate and approved the proposed budget for 2007-2008. The budget shows a projected $500,000 shortfall that will have to be made up or a deficit will again exist for 2008. No comments were received on the budget during open session.
Regular Meeting:
The draft of the HVAC bid was reviewed. Several items were identified as needing further clarification. The proposal, with additional information, will be brought back to the next meeting.
SBA Updates: The Board was informed of the rejection of the MHS MIP proposal for electrical upgrades. This project may be submitted as a Needs project in the fall. The Board was informed of the final approval of the roofing replacement for MES to be done after July 1, 2007.
A report was given on the meeting to address securing grants for an additional resource officer. It was agreed to contact the state for technical assistance in preparing this grant.
The school calendar for 2007-2008 was approved.
Information was provided on the public meeting to address water issues at East Hardy. It is tentatively scheduled for the 8th of May. Announcements will be sent out regarding this meeting.
The Superintendent requested an “Equalization Study” of programming between and among schools. It was agreed to include the LSICs in the work of this committee.
The Superintendent requested permission to conduct a review of Board Policies, State Code and Ethics Decision ruling to determine how request for items to be placed on the agenda should be addressed.
An update was provided on the Air Quality incident at MMS. The findings of the WVDOE air quality engineers showed no further presence of contaminants or allergens; proper working of the HVAC system, and that outside items brought into the building should be removed. Emergency Services and Hardy County Schools are finalizing procedures and procedures for addressing future reports. Information on the past operation of the HVAC system is expected shortly.

Statement Accomplishments
« Mr. Ray Funkhouser thanked all school personnel for making Hardy County a good school system. While we have problems, incidents such of those in Blacksburg puts it all in perspective.
« Mr. Ken Pack thanked WV State Road and Donnie Coby for working with MMS to conduct beautification plantings at the overlook on Corridor H.
« Mr. Rick Perkins reported that of the 72 juniors inducted into the highest honor organization at WVU, Phi Kappa Beta, four were from Hardy County – Reed Williams, Sarah Vacofsky, Nicole Riggleman and Laura Kessel.
« Mrs. Margaret Shriver commended everyone for working together to make the school system work. Tragedy at VT reminds us of this.
« Mrs. Sharon Hammer welcomed aboard the new bus operator, Jason Keplinger. Reported that Michelle Holstein has been selected as a finalist for recognition at the National Level in the US Today All Star Teacher Award.
« Ms. Barbara Whitecotton commented on her efforts to work with two families to address concerns they had – and the positive results. Reported that she has been selected to represent West Virginia, along with the State Board President and other state officials, at the National meeting of the School Board Association on Adolescent Literacy.
« Mr. Ronald Whetzel commended the work of Mrs. Veeta Burgess, Chief Financial Officer. Reported on the Food Service review being conducted and the positive comments that are being received.
The next regular meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on May 7, 2007 at the Hardy County Board of Education Office.
