The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education. SUMMARY
School Improvement:
« Ms. Barbara Whitecotton presented to the Board notification of the State Department approval of the school systems Five Year Strategic Plan 2006-2007. In addition, she reviewed the major objectives of the plan and the current status of each item.
Business Items:
« The Board approved entering into a contract agreement with Telecom Corporation, through the West Virginia Workforce Investment Board, for the schools to serve as training sites for approved adults. The school system shall have final approval of all individuals and a background check must be provided.
« The Agenda for the upcoming Local School Improvement Council annual presentations to the Board were approved.
« The Board appointed Mr. Rick Perkins to serve on the county calendar committee for the 2007-2008 school year.
« Two Out-of-County Student transfers were approved.
Superintendent’s Reports:
« An update on the Moorefield Intermediate School was provided. Site plans should be available in February for review and building plans in March. Discussion was held on the Legislative Grant Funds, in the West Virginia Department of Education Budget, and possible uses for these funds if released by the new legislative leadership. One consideration would be the expansion of the MIS Physical Education classroom into a larger gymnasium space. The Hardy County Board of Education, if the funds become available, will make final determination.
« Mr. Roger Champ of the County Commission, along with Mr. Whetzel, presented information on the efforts to reduce the speed limit and divert traffic from old Route 55 past the Day-Care and Middle School. Information on the proposed by-pass and extension of Caledonia Drive were also presented. Efforts will continue to address this need.
« Information on the actions taken with regard to the MHS Literary Magazine was presented. Included were the approximate timeline, review procedure and description of the revision that were made.
Public Comments:
« Mr. George Thomas expressed concern about students missing school for such activities as fishing trips and going to the movies.
« Mr. Steve Gapp discussed the Freedom of Information Act and verbally requested information on recent expenditures.
« Mr. Luther Whetzel addressed the Superintendents’ contract, routing of traffic on Route 55, purchasing textbooks on tape, use of radios at the schools to contact buses and all employees should be drug tested.

¬ Tony Russell – Assistant Principal – MHS – effective June 30, 2007, due to retirement. Resigned from Spanish Mentor for current school year.

Mission Statement Accomplishments:
« Mr. Ray Funkhouser thanked the bus operators for the excellent job they do in the inclement weather – great job!
« Mr. Kenneth Pack noted the work of the Athletic Directors and the long hours and dedication they have.
« Mr. Max Park reported on the FFA Winter Leadership Conference that was jointly attended by students from MHS, MMS and EHHS. It was a great event and opportunity for students to work together.
« Mr. Rick Perkins noted the 33 years of service by Roger Mongold to Hardy County Schools. Also commented on the outstanding students Mrs. Joanne Perkins had the opportunity to work with the first semester at MHS.
« Mrs. Margaret Shriver commented on the letter received from the State Title I staff commending the work of EHEMS and the entire states Reading First Program.
« Mrs. Sharon Hammer thanked Joyce Alt and Diana Coffman, secretaries in the Board Office, for their hard work, cooperation and dedication.
« Ms. Barbara Whitecotton thanked Tony Russell, Diane Tusing, Joe Sherman, Jeremy Simmons and Stephanie Simmons who are the Hardy County Team being trained in the state pilot program “Response to Intervention”.
« Mr. Ronald Whetzel thanked Mrs. Myrtle Webster for her additional contribution to the Maxwell Scholarships and the efforts of Jade Cullers, for her being selected by the Governor and First Lady as an essay winner. She was one of 4000 entries.
