SUMMARY
Business Items:
« With editorial revisions, the Board approved the Policy JFE Student and Staff Wellness Policies on Physical Activity and Nutrition. The policy will now be forwarded to the WVDOE for their review and approval.
« The Board approved CSOs for the following elective courses: Calculus, Tenth Grade Test Strategies, Ninth Grade Test Strategies and Business Math.
« The Board approved two work sessions in February as planning in preparation for the upcoming school year.
« Appointment of a Yearbook Committee motion did not receive a second. No motions to present as business items were made for Assignment of Legal Counsel, Policy GBJ Suspension and Dismissal and monthly expenditure reports.
Information Items:
« Mr. Brad Simmons, on behalf of the County Crisis Team, presented to the Board an update on the work of the committee and the status of crisis planning in Hardy County Schools. Information was presented on response time to emergencies, purchase of bus radios and guidelines for student actions.
« The Board received the proposed financial, personnel and Regular Board Meeting Calendar for February through June.

« Larry Salyers addressed the contract for the Superintendent, responsibility of Board members and state code.
« Rodney Hutton addressed expenditures, Board actions and need for drug and alcohol testing for all school employees.

¬ Temporary Head Teacher MES, until close of the school year, ½ time with 1.5 days extended employment term and salary supplement prorated for the remaining work days. Must be certified in Elementary Education, effective February 6, 2007.
¬ Clerk II EHEMS, three hours and 29 minutes a day, in the morning, 200 day position, including days in the remaining contract for this year.
¬ Cook II EHEMS 200 day position, including days remaining in contract for this year.
¬ Extra Duty Transportation Aide must meet bus at 6:30 a.m. to assist in transportation of handicapped student to County line and back in the p.m. Must be able to meet schedule for employment. This position may be eligible for overtime under FLSA and is not to exceed two hour a day overtime as applied based on hourly/overtime rate.
¬ After School Educator MES, for 9 weeks beginning January thru May 2007, this is for three days per week, 2.0 hours of employment at $20.00 per hour. Preference given to MES teachers.

The Board released the following statement regarding the renewal of the contract for the Superintendent:
The Hardy County Board of Education has reviewed the contract for the Superintendent, Ronald Whetzel, as required by county and state policy. We are pleased to report that a continuation of this contract has been offered to Mr. Whetzel. Provision of the contract include those established in past years and he was offered, and accepted, a contract for four years with a salary for the first year of $85,000 and a $3000 increments each of the remaining years.
Mission Statement Accomplishments:
« Mr. Ray Funkhouser thanked Mr. Simmons and the County Crisis Team, for their work on school safety.
« Mr. Kenneth Pack noted the efforts of the WVEA and local teachers for their efforts to secure higher wages. He noted the work required to become a teacher and the efforts they put into their jobs.
« Mr. Max Park commended the MMS FFA for their hosting of the recent Livestock Producers Meeting at MMS. They did a great job.
« Mr. Rick Perkins noted the efforts of Kayla Baranowski, student and Arthur Halterman, teacher at EHHS for their securing of a recycling grant for the school.
« Mrs. Margaret Shriver noted the MMS display of Differentiated Instruction activities in the Board Office. They are very attractive and informative.
« Mrs. Sharon Hammer commended the work of the Finance Department in closing out the 2006 year and getting the W2s out earlier than usual. Also noted the work of the School Health Nurses on their work on health related policies.
« Ms. Barbara Whitecotton commended the work of the Crisis Team and how well the plans worked recently at EHEMS.
« Mr. Ronald Whetzel extended appreciation to the retirees for their dedication to education and Hardy County Schools. We will be losing over 100 years of experience.
The next meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Hardy County Board of Education Office on February 5, 2007.
