The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education. SUMMARY
Presentations:
« The EHHS and EHEM LSIC’s presented their annual updates to the Board. Included in their presentations were: Review of 2006 Westest results, overview of the school Five-Year Plan, and activities being undertaken to accomplish these goals, evidence of success in meeting these goals. In addition schools presented information on future needs and goals. The Board commended the committees for their hard work.
In Other Actions:
« The Board approved a revision to the school calendar to have June 8th converted to an ISE day and June 7th to an Instructional day. This will be the last day for students.
« The Board reviewed the MIS Design Plans. These are to be returned to the Architects for submission to the SBA for final approval. Discussion was held on the need for lockers and efforts to secure information for a folding stage in the Physical Education Classroom. If plans are ready, the Architects will be scheduled to meet with the MIS Committee and the Board on March 19, 2007.
« An update was provided on the recent water meeting held at EHEM. Included was information on meeting compliance with all state water and sewer testing requirements and the results of the Water Quality Assessment conducted by the U.S. Department of Health in 2003. The Board was also informed of the approval of a grant to the RDA to have a community water system in place by 2008 and a sewer system by 2009. Action being taken as a result of the meeting include: exploring rescheduling of sewer plant operation, use of deodorizers, alternate water sample testing areas, and determination if methane gas is present at the sewer plant. At the Board’s request information on the following will be collected: cost/results of an additional water filtration system, determination of sources of sediment (when they occur) and alternations to existing school air-handlers. Retesting of numerous other inorganic compounds will also be conducted.
« The Board was informed that the dedication of the old gym at MHS in honor of Mr. Johnny Paugh is being planned for June 2007.
Delegations:
« Hardy County Education Association: Members presented information on legislative issues, specifically related to salary increases. Employees made inquiry regarding the Boards possible actions in deducting any pay if there was a strike. Further comments were made regarding expenditures of any local share funds, increasing extra duty pay and planning period pay, county concerns committee meetings, discipline steps for employees, implementation of educational programs, and the amount of testing being conducted with students.
« Parents EHEM: A number of parents and staff addressed the Board regarding their concerns regarding any consideration being given to having a possible 2/3 combined classroom at EHEM for the upcoming school year rather than separate teachers.
« Luther Whetzel: Expressed concerns about a transpiration delay and parent notification. He was informed that the issue has been subsequently addressed with the expectation that such notification occur. Concern was expressed about the procedures and results of inorganic materials water test at EHEM and information was presented on Federal requirements. The Board requested that results of full water testing would be made available for review.
Public Comments:
« Larry Salyers addressed providing alternate water sources in the event of water problems, maintenance of all current positions and reclassification of service personnel.
« Steve Gapp addressed county practices on addressing parent concerns and amount of expenditures for Board Office renovations and comments on county levy.
« Lisa Basye inquired as to availability of Spanish III at EHHS and the status of the Family and Consumer Science position.
Personnel Actions:
Employed:
« Chris Keckley – Spanish/ESL, Countywide for the 2007-2008 school year. Mr. Keckley is currently employed on an Alternative certificate which will continue next year.
« Tonya Nau – Cook I – MMS, effective March 6, 2007. ˝ time, three hours and twenty nine minutes per day, 200 days.
Resignations:
« Donna Dove – Custodian at EHEMS, effective June 30, 2007, due to retirement.
Approval of Extended Leave of Absence:
« Zella Wilkins – Custodian at EHHS for the remainder of the current school year.
Postings:
« Reading 7/8 English/Language Arts Teacher – MMS, for the 2007-2008 school year, Grades 5/8, must be able to teach English/Language Arts Grades 5/6, and Reading in Grades 5/8. This will require a Reading Specialist endorsement or an English/Language Arts Middle School endorsement.
« Substitute Custodian III – EHHS, to fill a leave of absence, from March 20, 2007 to the end of the 2006-2007 school year, 58 days. Must assume duties of a Custodian III.
« Principal – Moorefield Middle School, effective July 1, 2007, 225 day employment term. Must have Master’s Degree in an education related field. Must have, or be eligible for, WV Certification in Education Leadership, PK – Adult or in the grade level of the posting; experience in Administration preferred.
« Assistant Principal – Moorefield High School, effective the 2007-2008 school year. 210 day employment. Must have, or be eligible for, WV Certification in Education Leadership, PK – Adult or in the grade level of the posting; experience in Administration preferred. This position includes an Administrative Index.
Mission Statement Accomplishments:
« Mr. Red Funkhouser thanked the participants at the meeting for their input.
« Mr. Ken Pack thanked everyone at the meeting for presenting their needs and areas to be addressed.
« Mr. Max Park commented the work of the LSICs and the outstanding job they do.
« Mr. Rick Perkins commended the Basketball Teams from both schools for another great season. Noted the success of a Hardy County Schools graduate, Crystal Arose, for her acceptance into Physical Therapy training.
« Mrs. Margaret Shriver thanked the HCEA for sharing information and concerns.
« Mrs. Sharon Hammer noted the work of the Reading First teachers and especially Mrs. Hubbard and Ms. Holstein.
« Mr. Ronald Whetzel thanks the LSICs for their reports and focus on efforts to improved student achievement. Reported that Mr. Roy Harper, teacher at MMS, was a recipient of the Arch Coal Award for outstanding educators and that the school was to receive a $1000 grant as a result.
The next regular meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for March 19, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at Moorefield Middle School.
