SUMMARY

 

School Improvement Presentation:

 

?          Westest Presentation:  Ms. Barbara Whitecotton presented to the Board members and visitors, a local version of “Are You as Smart as a Fifth Grader?” by administering a sample of the Fifth grade Westest.  Members took the test and had their answers scored.  This was provided as an introduction of the Westest program that is being administered next week.

 

In Board Action:

 

?          Approved, with further revisions and corrections, the bid package for HVAC services.  The bid package will be distributed.

 

?          Received an update on the MIS Project with regard to bidding of site preparation and waiting on SBA approval of building plan.

 

?          Approved policy GBOA – Medical Examinations and policy KBE – Use of School Facilities with revisions.

 

?          The Superintendent provided an update on the status of Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College.

 

?          A report was provided on the power outage at East Hardy Schools and the Moorefield Middle School events of May 2, 2007, related to fire alarm, unknown odors and drug dog search.

 

?          A special meeting of the Board at East Hardy Early Middle School is scheduled for May 15, 2007 to report on status of the water supply.

 

?          A report on the WV Department of Education efficiency study was provided.  Reviewed were facilities, transportation, food service, finances and grants.  A full report will be received from the state.

?          Luther Whetzel commented on Bus operator training procedures, East Hardy water meeting, equalization study at EHHS not involving parents and values of consolidation.

«          1 Professional Educator at EHEMS, School Improvement Summer School - $20.00 per hour for five hours daily from 8:00a.m. until 1:00p.m. including planning, beginning June 18, 2007 through July 13, 2007, excluding June 20th and July 4th.  Preference given to teachers at the school.  Staff must be certified in Elementary Education.

«          1 Professional Educator at EHEMS, School Improvement Summer School, with additional duties as Director of the Summer School Program, - $20.00 per hour for five hours daily from 8:00a.m. until 1:00p.m. including planning beginning June 18, 2007 through July 13, 2007, excluding June 20th and July 4th.  Additional $1000.00 stipend for duties as Director.  Preference given to teachers at the school.  Staff must be certified in Elementary Education.

«          2 Bus Operators, East Hardy attendance area – beginning June 18, 2007 through July 13, 2007, excluding June 20th and July 4th, beginning at 7:00a.m. and ending at 2:00p.m.

?          Mathias Area, with one stop along Rt. 259 to EHEMS

?          Wardensville Area with additional stops along Rt. 55 to EHEMS

 

Board Members received a copy of the Superintendent’s evaluation form and set the next meeting to go over these.

 

Mission Statement Accomplishments:

 

?          Mr. Ray Funkhouser commended, along with Mrs. Shriver, the excellent National Honors Society Banquet at East Hardy High School.

 

?          Mr. Ken Pack noted the passing of Virginia Garrett, mother in law of Susan Garrett.  Thanked the Garrett Family for their dedication to education in Hardy County.

 

?          Mr. Max Park reported on his attendance at the MMS Band Concert.  It was an excellent performance and a large number of students participating.

 

?          Mr. Rick Perkins noted that Leon Franklin, Josh See and Joy Coby were all selected as PVC Coaches of the Year.  Also commended the students for setting new PVC Track records.

 

?          Mrs. Margaret Shriver congratulated Tanner Carr, son of Vivian and Mick Carr, for winning First Place at the State Math Field Day.  Reported on the excellent National Honor Society Banquet.

 

?          Mrs. Sharon Hammer commended John Mathias, EHHS, for receiving the Neil Bucklew Scholarship at WVU, the five EHHS students, Alli Branson, Samantha Pappas, Jeremy Combs, Stacey Herron and Jason Shipe, who were selected to the WVU Marching Band and Mrs. Jennifer Strawderman for the excellent work in preparing scholarship applications.

 

?          Ms. Barbara Whitecotton noted the passing of Susan McBeth, former Hardy County Teacher, and her contributions to the students.

 

?          Mr. Ronald Whetzel thanked Mrs. Peggi Wright, Health Nurse and Mrs. Rita Walker, secretary for Transportation and Maintenance, for their assistance as a result of the accident he had at Moorefield Middle School.

 

The next regular meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Hardy County Board of Education Office on May 21, 2007.  A special meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on May 15, 2007 at East Hardy Early Middle School.
