SUMMARY

 

Presentations:

 

«          Brandon Shockey, student at Moorefield Middle School, presented to the Board information on his efforts to start an after school drama club.  He discussed the process he followed for getting approval and the volunteering of Mr. Steve Smith, of McCoy Theatre, and Mrs. Barbara Stickley, teacher at Moorefield Elementary School, as sponsors.  Included was a letter he received from Jessica Garner Affleck, actress, in support of this effort.  The Board was most impressed with his efforts and gave their support for the project.

 

«          Ms. Barbara Whitecotton presented a mid year report on the status of the Five Year Strategic Plan.  Included were a review of benchmark testing, mission and goal, and the status of the specific objectives of the plan.


In Other Actions:

 

«          The Board reviewed the work completed at the recent work session in regard to the Community Involvement project.  Included was a review of the project, efforts to identify key questions, establishment of procedures for conducting meetings, and identification of key individual and groups to contact.  The work should take place on gathering input over the next several months.

 

«          The Board approved the agenda for the upcoming LSIC meeting.

 

«          The Board is in support of the WVSBA Resolution related to maintaining Board control of the local share of property taxes.

 

«          The Board received an update on the continuing efforts to address revisions to the School Aid Formula that is adversely affecting Hardy County.

 

«          Several Out of County Student transfers were approved.

 

Public Comment:

 

«          Mr. Brad Simmons commended on the work of the HCEA with the Legislature, encouraged efforts to address personnel matters as soon as possible, HCEA support of local tax share options and effects of reductions on workload of personnel

«          Stephanie EyeAfter School Program – Moorefield Middle School – 36 days of employment, beginning February 1, 2008 through May 9, 2008, at $20.00 per hour for ninety minutes per day, 3 days a week, from 3:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.

«          Stephanie Simmons – After School Program – Moorefield Middle School – 36 days of employment, beginning February 1, 2008 through May 9, 2008, at $20.00 per hour for ninety minutes per day, 3 days a week, from 3:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.

«          Devin Hamilton – Varsity Girls’ Track (to fill a one year leave of absence) – EHHS

Postings:

«          Teacher Mentor – Physical Education/Health – EHEMS – ½ year, spring 2008, preference given to individual who has completed new teacher/mentor training and is in the same school.  Must have three years of teaching experience.

«          After School Program – MMS – (2) two positions – Elementary/Middle School certified.  Teacher must adhere to the AIM model, and are responsible for the TIER III components.  36 days of employment, beginning February 11, 2008 through May 9, 2008, at $20.00 per hour for ninety minutes per day, 3 days a week, from 3:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.  Preference given to Moorefield Middle School staff members.

«          One Team Coaching Assistant / Volunteer Coach for following Spring sports:

§         Girls’ Track – EHHS

§         Boys’ Track – EHHS

§         Girls’ Track – MHS

§         Assistant Varsity Baseball – MHS

 

Team Coaching Assistant/Volunteer Coach:  Must have a high school diploma, background check and reference check, and completed the WVSSAC first aid and coaching clinic for those applying who are not professional educators.  These trainings must be completed prior to applying and assuming the position.  Must be eligible for a coaching license through the WVDE and is responsible for all cost associated for this license.  This individual will work directly under the supervision of the Head Coach, and will be responsible to the principal of designee.  Minimal pay of $1.00 per year/per season, etc.  These coaches are limited to the number of paid coaches per sport.

 

Mission Statement Accomplishments:

 

«          Mr. Ray Funkhouser commended Mr. Ronald Whetzel and Mr. Brad Simmons for their efforts with the West Virginia Legislature to address the funding formula bills.

 

«          Mr. Kenneth Pack noted the progress being made at the Moorefield Intermediate School.

 

«          Mr. Max Park commended the East Hardy staff for handling the emergency so well.  Our plans for address such events, works.

 

«          Mr. Rick Perkins commended Deputy Bryan Ward and the recent article in the Moorefield Examiner.  His efforts to raise awareness for improving the safety for all students are appreciated.

 

«          Mrs. Margaret Shriver reported that the Town of Moorefield personnel commended Mr. Doug Hines for how well he handled the evacuation of Moorefield High School.

 

«          Ms. Barbara Whitecotton stated that it is great to work with a staff that steps up when it is time to handle emergencies.

 

«          Mr. Ronald Whetzel commended the Principals for their work on “Compelling Conversations”.  They demonstrate a real understanding and involvement with individual students.

 

The next regular meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. February 18, 2008 at the Hardy County Board of Education Office.
