SUMMARY

 

Presentations:

 

«          School Resource Officer Update - Deputy Bryan Ward provided an update.  Included was information on the work with the schools, educational activities and the Deputy Phil program for elementary schools.  He also reported on recent searches by drug dogs at MHS and EHHS – no illegal substances were found.  The Board commended him for his efforts.

 

«          “Compelling Conversations” Book Study continuation – Ms. Barbara Whitecotton, Assistant Superintendent, continued the book study with the Board.

 

«          HCEA Representation – Association Legislative priorities – Mrs. Jennifer Strawderman, Co President of the HCEA, gave a report on the legislative priorities of the WVEA and gave appreciation for the support of Hardy County Schools for their efforts.

 

In Other Actions:

 

«          The Board was informed that the SBA School Access Safety Plan was approved and the county will begin the process of securing equipment for installation beginning with the High Schools.

 

«          The Board was informed that the SBA is changing its Major Improvement Projects submission to the Fall of 2008 and is attempting to increase the amount available for funding to $1,000,000.

 

«          An update was provided on the recent work session of the Board.  Included was information on the legal requirements regarding an excess levy and the plans for working with the Community Involvement Planner on developing a plan to soliciting staff, parent and community input into what may be a proposed levy.

 

«          Waivers for AP English, Literature, AP History and College English were approved for submission to the state.

 

Public Comments:

 

«          Mr. Robert Dillard addressed the Board regarding the need for information on a proposed levy and shared information from other counties.

«          Mr. Rodney Hutton addressed the Board regarding a bus route, heat at MHS and the proposed levy.

 

Personnel Actions:

 

Employed:

«          Chad Williams – Comprehensive Physical Education (PK or K – 12) / Health (5 – 12), East Hardy Early Middle School, effective January 08, 2008.  Will be removed from the Substitute teachers list.

«          Linda Philbrick – Temporary Employee Contact:  ESL Education / Evaluation / Spanish Language – Countywide, $20.00 per hour, up to 200 hours, paid through ESL Funds.

«          Lisa Snyder – Paraprofessional / Supervisory Aide II – Moorefield Elementary School – For second semester on the 2007-2008 school year only.  Effective January 22, 2008.  Will be removed from the Substitute Aide list.

«          Joann Wilking – Extra Duty Assignment – Saturday School Detention, Moorefield Middle School, $80.00 per day, up to one day per month.

«          Jeremy Simmons – Extra Duty Assignment – British Literature CSO’s for Dual Credit Classes – Moorefield High School, $600.00 yearly.

«          JoEllen Halterman – Extra Duty Assignment – British Literature CSO’s for Dual Credit Classes – East Hardy High School, $600.00 yearly.

 

Resignations:

«          Nicole Hebb-Burner – Substitute Teacher

«          Arlene Hoffman – Substitute Teacher

«          Mike Funkhouser – Extra Duty Assignment, second semester for planning period buyout.

«          Heath Hershberger – Golf Coach, East Hardy High School

 

Continued Postings:  Professional Educators:

«          After School Position – East Hardy Early Middle School – beginning December 2007.  This individual must adhere to the RTI model and are responsible for the Tier III components.  One (1) position in Grades 4-8, funded through School Improvement, certified to serve Middle School students.

«          Building Trades – East Hardy High School – ½ time position, must comply with the requirements of a CTE teacher for this program.  Effective January 22, 2008.

 

The following postings, although some are filled with long term substitute teachers, will continue to post until filled with certified individuals

 

«          Math – EHHS, Grades 9-12

«          Family & Consumer Science – MHS, Grades 9-12

«          Family & Consumer Science – MMS, Grades 5-8

«          ESL Countywide/Spanish – MMS/MHS, PK-Adult

«          Countywide Speech/Language Pathologist – MA or MS in Speech/Language Pathology may be eligible for National Board supplement with county stipend for ASHA certification.

 

 

Student Teaching Assignments:

The following individuals will be completing Student Teaching assignments in our schools.

«          Justin Campbell – West Virginia University – Chemistry/General Science – MHS

«          Emily Sherman – University of Phoenix – Elementary Education - MES

 

Mission Statement Accomplishments

 

«          Mr. Ray Funkhouser commented on the selection of Reed Williams as defensive MVP and noted he was a great representative for West Virginia and Hardy County.

 

«          Mr. Kenneth Pack commended staff and administration for how the heating issues at MMS were handled.

 

«          Mr. Max Park congratulated students for their selection to all district Band and that they will be performing in Keyser on January 16.

 

«          Mr. Rick Perkins commended Reed Williams for his selection as Academic All American.  Commended on the need for the community to work together to get people involved in the proposed levy.  The focus needs to be on what we want to do for the children of our county.

 

«          Mrs. Margaret Shriver thanked the numerous staff members who take the time to support academic competitions.  They are a great asset.

 

«          Mrs. Sharon Hammer noted the work of Mrs. Bonnie Rogers, Principal of the new Moorefield Intermediate School, for her work with staff.  Also commended the work of the Guidance Counselors.

 

«          Ms. Barbara Whitecotton thanked the staff for their work on Benchmark testing and how valuable this is to assessing students’ needs.

 

«          Mr. Ronald Whetzel noted the work Deputy Ward.  He is a great resource and much of his success can be seen in his efforts to prevent problems in our school.

 

The next meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Hardy County Board of Education Office on Tuesday, January 22, 2008.
