The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education. SUMMARY
The meeting was preceded by the annual awards recognition of students. Students were recognized in many areas of accomplishment, they also received personalized certificates. This was followed by the introduction of the teachers of the year from the various schools. Recognized were Michele Holstein EHEMS, Henry Hodges EHHS, Jane Yokum MES and Mary Beth Hardy MMS. The Hardy County Teacher of the Year, as selected by the selection committee, was Ms. Michele Holstein of East Hardy Early Middle School.
Business Items:
Emergency Dismissal Procedures were reviewed. Several recommendations were made to the form and process. These will be reviewed and recommendations brought back to the Board at a later meeting.
EHEM School Organization update was provided by Mrs. Rebecca Brill, Principal, and Ms. Barbara Whitecotton, Assistant Superintendent. The work of the focus group, survey results and progress to date were reviewed. Mr. Ronald Whetzel informed the Board of his work with the West Virginia Department of Education regarding legal, policy and procedure issues. The Board requested a letter to the State Department asking for a speedy response in order for the Board to further consider the reconfiguration of EHEMS.
The Board received a draft of the Exam Exception Policy as prepared by a countywide committee. The policy is to be sent out for comment.
Filter Service Bid documents was reviewed. Several additions were requested. The Bid will be revised and brought back to the next meeting.
School Access Safety Grant: The Board was provided information on utilization of General Service Agreement procedures which are pre-approved bidders for such services. Use of the program would meet all state requirements and resuce the time necessary to secure services. This item will be brought back to the next meeting.
Fire Marshall Report was presented. Discussion was held regarding timeline and responses. Information will be brought back to the next meeting.
Several student transfers were approved.

« Mr. Mike Funkhouser thanked the Board for support of the Exam Exemption Policy, and thanked the Board for their efforts to support the work of the school system, and extended support and appreciation for the work of Mr. Max Park and Mr. Ray Funkhouser.

« Custodian I East Hardy Early Middle School/Moorefield High School, this position will take affect on August 21, 2008, and is considered a half time position at East Hardy Early Middle School until the opening of the Moorefield Intermediate School in the early winter of 2008. Once MIS opens, then this job will become a full time job beginning at 2:00 p.m. until 5:15 p.m. at Moorefield High School with 30 minutes travel and lunch and assuming duties at East Hardy Early Middle School at approximately 6:15 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. 200-day employment term with night shift differential and travel compensation between MHS and EHEMS.

The annual Superintendents Evaluation was completed. The following statement was released by the Board:
The Hardy County Board of Education has completed its annual evaluation of Superintendent Ron Whetzel as required by county and state policy. This evaluation has consisted of both an objective checklist and a review of the Superintendents Annual Goals, which were approved in September of 2007. We are pleased to report that overall Mr. Whetzel received a score of either meets or exceeds standards in each of the evaluation areas. Future goals for the Superintendent, and the Hardy County Board of Education, were also discussed.
Mission Statement Accomplishments:
« Mr. Ray Funkhouser commended the Student Recognition activities and the selection of Ms. Michele Holstein as Hardy County Teacher of the Year.
« Mr. Kenneth Pack commented on the Gifted Students Trip to New York City. It was very successful and a great opportunity for students.
« Mr. Max Park reported on his participation in the Moorefield High School Scholarship Committee selection process. Over $31,000 was awarded to support students furthered education.
« Mr. Rick Perkins reported on his attendance at the EHEMS Focus Group meeting. It was a very productive process.
« Mrs. Margaret Shriver extended thanks to the entire staff and students for an excellent year.
« Mrs. Sharon Hammer noted that Ms. Holstein was an excellent teacher and a joy to work with in her positions with Reading First.
« Ms. Barbara Whitecotton reported on a successful Westest administration. Commented Mr. Ray Funkhouser for his dedication to Hardy County Schools.
« Mr. Ronald Whetzel commended the excellent graduations conducted by EHHS and MHS. Their focus on the entire graduating student class was excellent.
The next meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Hardy County Board of Education Offices on June 23, 2008.
