SUMMARY

 

Business Items:

 

«          Financial update was provided to the Board.  Information on Bank Reconciliation, Treasureres Report and Check Register was provided.  Current financial status remains at previously projected deficit.  Personnel formula remains at the current level; however an upcoming state meeting to address the formula is scheduled.  This may be affected by the loss of $120,000 due to ta WV Tax Department error.  Efforts have been put forth to have the money restore through an act of the legislature at an upcoming Special Session.

 

In addition to the above, the Board approved ING to provide 403(b) investment monitoring services to board employees.  Also approved was a trial effort with Enterprise Car Rental to determine if car rental for out of county travel would be a cost savings over individual reimbursements for travel.

 

«          HCEA provided an update on WVEA Delegate Convention, status of retirement vote, efforts to attract new teachers, professionalism and working with HCEA, thanks to Mr. Ray Funkhouser and Mr. Max Park, for their service to Hardy County, and an invitiation to the HCEA annual dinner.

 

«          Information on several items realted to the School Building Authority was presented.  Included was notification of the non-selection of the MHS Needs Project for funding, funding timelines and status of the new CEFP for Hardy County Schools, and an update on the school access grants.

 

«          A parent/teacher delegation from EHEMS addressed the Board on enrollment and request not to have a combined class.  A report was given on the current enrollments in key grades at MES and EHEMS which showed all classes currently within the state guidelines.  No action was taken.

 

«          Filter service bid proposal was reviewed and carried over until the next meeing to gather additional input into specificiations.

 

«          Mr. Max Park, Board member, was selected to serve on the MHS Scholarship Committee.

«          Discussion was held on the merits, and budget impact, of Head Teachers verses Assistant Principals.  No action was taken.

«          Summer School Position – East Hardy Early Middle School – (2) Teachers to teach classes at EHEMS Grades K-3, certified in elementary education, reading specialist endorsement preferred.  $20.00 per hour for five hours daily, 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., including planning beginning June 23, 2008 through July 18, 2008, excluding July 4, 2008.  Paid through Reading First funds.

«          Summer School Position – East Hardy Early Middle School – (1) Teacher to teach classes at EHEMS, Reading grades 4-8 and Math grades 4-8, $20.00 per hour for five hours daily, 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., including planning beginning June 23, 2008 through July 18, 2008, excluding July 4, 2008.  Paid through Title I School Improvement funds.

«          Summer School Positions – East Hardy Early Middle School – (1) Teacher to teach classes at EHEMS and assume additional duties as Summer School Director with $1,000.00 supplement in addtion to $20.00 per hour for five hours daily, 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., including planning beginning June 23, 2008 through July 18, 2008, excluding July 4, 2008.  Paid through Title I School Improvement funds.

«          Summer School Position – Moorefield Elementary School – (4) classroom teachers to serve students in Grades K-6, must be certified in the grade levels affected, to serve identified Migrant children at $20.00 per hour for four hours a day for 30 days employment beginning June 19, 2008 excluding June 20 and July 4.  Maximum of 120 hours.  Prior experience with Migrant children preferred.  One teacher must speak Spanish. 

«          Summer School Position – Moorefield Elementary School – (1) Director of Migrant Summer education program at $30.00 per hour for a maximum number of 100 hours for the summer beginning June 19, 2008.   Experience working with Migrant population required.

«          Summer School Position – Moorefield Elementary School – (1) Cook – three hours and 20 minutes per day for a maximum of 30 days, excluding June 20 and July 4.

«          Summer School Position – (2) Bus Operators for the Moorefield attendance area.  Pick up in three locations around the western portion of the county.  For a maximum of 30 days excluding June 20 and July 4.

«          Doug Boswell – 2007-2008 school year - Agreed to cover Driver’s Education at EHHS for several weeks in Mr. Devin Hamilton’s absence.

«          Scott Stutler – 2008-2009 school year – Agreed to teacher Health/Physical Education at MIS/MMS, removed from transfer list

The Board carried over the Superintendents evaluation until the next meeting.

 

Mission Statement Accomplishment:

 

?          Mr. Ray Funkhouser expressed appreciation to Mrs. Veeta Burgess for her work with the budget and how she has made it understandable to the Board Members.

 

?          Mr. Kenneth Pack extended appreciation to Mr. Ray Funkhouser and Mr. Max Park for their years of service to the Board.

 

?          Mr. Max Park noted the presentations by student at the MHS FFA Banquet.

 

?          Mrs. Margaret Shriver commended the success of the Hardy County Schools participants at the State Track meet.

 

?          Mrs. Sharon Hammer noted that Sherry Barb, Food Service Supervisor, completed her four-year degree through West Virginia University, Congratulations!

 

?          Ms. Barbara Whitecotton commended the work of the Focus Group at EHEMS.

 

?          Mr. Ronald Whetzel extended appreciation to Mr. Robert Paskel for his leadership on the Five Year Plan steering committee.

 

The next regular meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Moorefield High School on June 2, 2008.
