Dear Parents/Guardians, We want to bring your attention to important changes in the law regarding Compulsory School Attendance in West Virginia, specifically state code §18-8-4. Please note that these changes are mandated by state law and are not decisions made by Hardy County Schools. According to the updated state law, the following are the only recognized excused absences: - Medical or dental appointments with a written excuse from a physician or dentist - Personal illness or injury of the student or a family member (limited to 10 per year) - Death in the family - Judicial obligations or court appearances - Military requirements for students who are enlisted or enlisting Any other absences will be classified as unexcused. To ensure proper recording of absences, please provide documentation to the school within 3 instructional days after your child returns. If this documentation is not submitted within the specified timeframe, the absence will be marked as unexcused. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and understand the concerns that may arise from this change. However, it is important to emphasize that we must follow state law. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in prioritizing school attendance. Sincerely, Hardy County Schools Attendance Office

Last evening, we were alerted to violent threats against schools circulating on social media, involving several institutions statewide and regionally. These threats, while often intended to cause widespread disruption and fear, are being treated with the utmost seriousness. We are actively working with the Department of Homeland Security, WV State Police, and local law enforcement. Based on the current intelligence, these threats have been deemed not credible. However, as a precaution, you will notice increased law enforcement at our schools tomorrow. The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority. Please remember that it is critical to report potential threats directly to law enforcement or school officials rather than repeatedly sharing screenshots on social media, which only serves to spread fear and confusion. Any threats made against our schools are considered acts of terrorism and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Thank you for your cooperation in maintaining a safe environment for our students. Sincerely, Dr. Sheena Van Meter Superintendent

A message from your school nurse: It is important for any student that requires medication to be given at school to have the order to the school nurse prior to the first day for students. This includes students that carry emergency medication on them. Also, West Virginia law dictates that students may not attend school until vaccinations are up-to-date. Any student that is absent based upon not having vaccinations will be documented as an unexcused absence. If you need any assistance, please call the school nurse.

🚍 School Bus Safety Reminder 🚍 Let's all take a moment to prioritize safety, especially when it comes to our students. On Monday morning, and every day this school year, please be extra vigilant as school buses are back on the roads. 🔸 Watch for students loading and unloading. Always stop when you see a bus with its stop sign extended and red lights flashing. 🔸 Be patient. Allow extra time for your commute as buses make frequent stops. 🔸 Slow down. Reduce your speed in school zones and near bus stops. Our children’s safety is our top priority. Let’s work together to ensure they get to and from school safely. Thank you for helping to keep our community safe! 💛 #SchoolBusSafety #WatchForKids #SafetyFirst #BackToSchool
